Volvo V40 (2012-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Interesting alternative to Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series | Cramped interior and poor luggage capacity |
| Fuel-efficient diesel models | Not great to drive |
| Impressive safety equipment | No hybrid or electric option |
Quick Summary
The Volvo V40 (2012-2019) is a five-door hatchback that competes with the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, and Mercedes-Benz A-Class. It offers an upmarket feel both inside and out, with a plush interior and smart styling that feels a cut above the average family hatchback. Available in various trim levels from basic ES to sporty R-Design and rugged Cross-Country variants, the V40 underwent a mid-life facelift in 2016 before production ended in 2019.
If safety is a priority, the V40 excels with impressive safety equipment and a reassuring, solid driving experience. However, it's pretty average to drive, with uninspiring handling and an unsettled ride, particularly on larger-wheeled models. The rear is cramped with a modest 335-litre boot, though the front offers decent space. An excellent engine range includes fuel-efficient diesels achieving 55-65mpg, whilst smaller petrol engines deliver around 45mpg. Service costs lean towards premium levels, so independent specialists may offer better value.
Best for: Buyers seeking a premium-feeling hatchback with excellent safety credentials, those prioritising fuel efficiency with diesel engines, and drivers wanting an interesting alternative to German rivals.
Not ideal for: Those needing spacious rear seating or large boot capacity, drivers seeking engaging handling and dynamic performance, or buyers wanting modern hybrid or electric options.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo V40 | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 31.7% | 4.1/5 |
| BMW 1 Series | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 38.4% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi A3 | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.2% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen Golf Mk7 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 31.9% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the V40 if: You prioritise safety and want a premium-feeling hatchback, seek fuel-efficient diesel engines, or desire an interesting alternative to German premium rivals.
Consider alternatives if: You need spacious rear seating or a large boot, want engaging handling and dynamic performance, or require modern hybrid or electric options.
Competitive Position: The Volvo V40 (2012-2019) is a distinctive choice in the premium hatchback segment, offering excellent safety credentials and a plush interior that rivals the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. However, it falls short in driving dynamics compared to the Volkswagen Golf, which is a more talented all-rounder. The V40's cramped rear and modest boot capacity are notable drawbacks, and its premium service costs may deter budget-conscious buyers. Nevertheless, for those prioritising safety, style, and fuel efficiency over performance, the V40 remains a compelling and interesting alternative to mainstream German rivals.

(21 reviews)Customers say
The Volvo V40, particularly the 2019 model, is appreciated by owners for its stylish design and extensive features, making it a visually appealing option. However, there are concerns about reliability, specifically with clutches, which can be expensive to fix. While many find the value to be good, its discontinuation raises some doubts. Overall, drivers enjoy how it looks and the driving experience, but some aspects of usability, like the navigation system and controls, received criticism.

What people say
Smart and beautifully fitted out inside. Built like the proverbial tank with loads of luxury extras.
I had 2 Volvo s60s wanted a v40 as my next car just couldn’t afford one. The layout is nearly same as s60. The v40 is good value at the right price.
The car has lots of features including privacy glass, parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, rear parking sensors, climate control, air con, sat nav, bluetooth, DAB radio, virtual cockpit dash, cruise control, full leather seats, electric front seats, keyless start and start-stop. It has 26644 miles on the clock and was sold at a competitive price.
Car is great, it got more or less everything I wanted in the car. My only concern is car was discontinued in 2019. But I guess you cant have everything.
Sad about the V40, love the design but reports of dodgy clutches, costing over £1000 to fix (10% of the cost of a decent used V40) have turned me off them.
