Volvo V40 (2012-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Interesting alternative to Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series	Cramped interior and poor luggage capacity
Fuel-efficient diesel models	Not great to drive
Impressive safety equipment	No hybrid or electric option

Quick Summary

The Volvo V40 (2012-2019) is a five-door hatchback that competes with the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, and Mercedes-Benz A-Class. It offers an upmarket look and feel, with a plush interior and smart styling that sets it apart from typical family hatchbacks. Available in various trim levels from basic ES to sporty R-Design and rugged Cross-Country variants, the V40 provides generous equipment and a comprehensive engine range. A mid-life facelift in 2016 brought updated styling and enhanced equipment across the range.

If safety is a priority, the V40 excels with impressive safety equipment and a reassuring, solid driving experience ideal for long journeys. Diesel models offer exceptional fuel economy, with the D2 achieving 60-65mpg and the D3 around 55mpg. However, the V40 is average to drive with uninspiring handling and an unsettled ride, particularly on larger-wheeled models. The rear is cramped with a modest 335-litre boot, and Volvo service costs lean towards premium pricing. Production ended in 2019 with no direct replacement, as Volvo shifted focus to larger vehicles.

Best for: Safety-conscious buyers seeking an upmarket alternative to mainstream hatchbacks, those prioritising fuel efficiency with diesel engines, and drivers valuing plush interiors and generous equipment.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking engaging handling or spacious rear accommodation, those wanting the latest hybrid or electric technology, or drivers looking for the most affordable premium hatchback option.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the V40 if: Safety is paramount, you value an upmarket feel and plush interior, seek fuel-efficient diesel options, or want an interesting alternative to mainstream premium hatchbacks.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling, need spacious rear accommodation, require modern hybrid or electric technology, or want the most affordable premium hatchback option.

Competitive Position: The Volvo V40 (2012-2019) is a distinctive choice in the premium hatchback segment, offering impressive safety credentials, a plush interior, and excellent diesel efficiency. However, it is outperformed by rivals like the Volkswagen Golf and BMW 1 Series in driving dynamics and overall ratings. The Golf is a more talented all-rounder, whilst the BMW offers superior handling. The V40 remains an excellent choice for safety-conscious buyers seeking an upmarket alternative with distinctive Scandinavian design, though its cramped rear and average driving experience may deter those prioritising space or engagement.
