Volvo V40 (2012-2019) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Interesting alternative to Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series | Cramped interior and poor luggage capacity |
| Fuel-efficient diesel models | Not great to drive |
| Impressive safety equipment | No hybrid or electric option |
Quick Summary
The Volvo V40, produced from 2012 to 2019, is a five-door hatchback designed to compete with premium rivals like the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. It offers an upmarket look and feel, both inside and out, and was available in various trim levels including the sporty R-Design and rugged Cross-Country. While it excels in safety and boasts a range of efficient engines, particularly the D2 diesel which can achieve 60-65mpg, its production ceased in 2019 without a direct replacement as Volvo shifted focus to larger vehicles.
Despite its premium aspirations, the V40's driving dynamics are less inspiring, with somewhat inert handling and a ride that isn't as smooth as its best competitors. Rear seat space and the 335-litre boot are only average, and the narrow rear windows can make the back feel cramped. Running costs for diesels are low, but petrol T5 models are thirsty. Servicing costs lean towards premium, though service plans offer discounts. It represents a safe, stylish, and well-equipped option, though it falls short in practicality and driving engagement compared to some rivals.
Best for: Buyers prioritizing safety, a plush interior, smart styling, and efficient diesel engines. Those looking for a premium feel without the premium price tag of German rivals.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking engaging driving dynamics, abundant rear passenger space or boot capacity, or those who prefer lower servicing costs from independent specialists.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo V40 | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 31.7% | 4.1/5 |
| BMW 1 Series | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 37.4% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi A3 | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.5% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen Golf | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 32.4% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the V40 if: You prioritise safety, a plush interior, smart styling, and efficient diesel engines, or want a premium feel without the top-tier German price tag.
Consider alternatives if: You seek engaging driving dynamics, generous rear passenger space or boot capacity, or prefer lower servicing costs.
Competitive Position: The Volvo V40 (2012-2019) is a compelling option in the premium compact hatchback segment, offering class-leading safety, a sophisticated interior, and a range of efficient engines. While it doesn't match rivals like the BMW 1 Series for driving engagement or the VW Golf for overall practicality, its distinctive styling and strong emphasis on safety make it an attractive alternative for buyers seeking something different from the usual German offerings. Its strong value on the used market further enhances its appeal.

4.6 Overall rating
(21 reviews)Smart and beautifully fitted out inside. Built like the proverbial tank with loads of luxury extras.
I had 2 Volvo s60s wanted a v40 as my next car just couldn’t afford one. The layout is nearly same as s60. The v40 is good value at the right price.
The car has lots of features including privacy glass, parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, rear parking sensors, climate control, air con, sat nav, bluetooth, DAB radio, virtual cockpit dash, cruise control, full leather seats, electric front seats, keyless start and start-stop. It has 26644 miles on the clock and was sold at a competitive price.
Car is great, it got more or less everything I wanted in the car. My only concern is car was discontinued in 2019. But I guess you cant have everything.
Sad about the V40, love the design but reports of dodgy clutches, costing over £1000 to fix (10% of the cost of a decent used V40) have turned me off them.
