Volvo V90 (2016-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Comfortable on long journeys	Not all that exciting to drive
Superb safety equipment	A Mercedes, BMW or Audi feels more premium
Practical and spacious boot	Diesels powerful but gruff-sounding

Quick Summary

The Volvo V90 (2016-present) is a premium estate car that prioritises comfort, practicality, and style over driving dynamics. With 560 litres of boot space and a sloping rear windscreen design, it offers a modern aesthetic whilst maintaining generous passenger space and a comfortable driving position. The cabin features Volvo's signature clean, uncluttered design with a nine-inch portrait-shaped Sensus touchscreen infotainment system. Safety is paramount, with a five-star Euro NCAP rating and Volvo's Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system available on most models.

Engine options have evolved significantly since launch, with the initial D4 and D5 diesel choices now supplemented by petrol alternatives and plug-in hybrid variants. The D4 diesel offers the best real-world fuel economy at around 45mpg, whilst petrol engines are quieter but thirstier at approximately 30mpg. The 2020 update introduced mild-hybrid and plug-in-hybrid options with improved efficiency. Insurance groups range from 27 to 43, and vehicles costing over £40,000 attract an additional annual tax of £325 for five years. As a used purchase, the V90 represents an excellent choice for those prioritising comfort and practicality over sportiness.

Best for: Families seeking a comfortable, practical premium estate car; long-distance drivers; those prioritising safety and luxury; buyers wanting excellent build quality and Scandinavian design.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling; those wanting the most spacious boot in the segment; buyers prioritising the premium feel of German rivals; those requiring the lowest running costs.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the V90 if: You prioritise comfort and practicality on long journeys, value excellent safety features, appreciate Scandinavian design and build quality, or seek a spacious premium estate car for family use.

Consider alternatives if: You want the most engaging driving experience, require the largest boot capacity, prefer the premium feel of German rivals, or need the lowest possible running costs.

Competitive Position: The Volvo V90 (2016-present) is a strong contender in the premium estate car segment, offering exceptional comfort, safety, and practicality. Whilst the BMW 5 Series Touring excels in driving dynamics and the Mercedes E-Class Estate provides more boot space, the V90 delivers superior comfort for long-distance travel and outstanding safety credentials. The Audi A6 Avant is equally refined, but the V90's Scandinavian design philosophy and Pilot Assist semi-autonomous system set it apart. For buyers prioritising comfort and safety over sportiness, the V90 represents an excellent choice in the premium estate market.
