Volvo V90 (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfortable on long journeys | Not all that exciting to drive |
| Superb safety equipment | A Mercedes, BMW or Audi feels more premium |
| Practical boot space and cabin design | Diesel engines powerful but gruff-sounding |
Quick Summary
The Volvo V90 (2016-present) is a premium estate car that prioritises comfort, practicality, and safety above all else. With 560 litres of boot space and a sloping roofline that compromises capacity slightly, it remains a highly practical family vehicle. The cabin design is clean and uncluttered, with generous space for passengers and a comfortable driving position. Volvo's commitment to safety is evident, with a five-star Euro NCAP rating and the City Safety autonomous emergency braking system fitted as standard across the range.
The V90 offers a diverse engine lineup, from economical diesel options (D4 and D5) to quieter petrol variants (T4, T5, and T6 AWD), with plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid alternatives available from 2020 onwards. Whilst the driving experience prioritises comfort over handling finesse, the V90 excels on long journeys. Diesel engines deliver strong performance and good fuel economy, though they can sound gruff when accelerating. Petrol engines are quieter but thirstier, whilst plug-in hybrids offer excellent performance and efficiency for those who charge regularly. Insurance groups range from 27 to 43, comparable with rival premium estates.
Best for: Families seeking a comfortable, practical, and safe premium estate car; drivers prioritising long-distance comfort and excellent safety features; those wanting a spacious cabin with modern Scandinavian design.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging, dynamic handling; buyers wanting more boot space than rivals; those unwilling to tolerate gruff diesel engine noise or seeking the premium feel of German competitors.

The Verdict
You should buy the V90 if: You prioritise comfort and safety on long journeys, seek a practical premium estate with excellent Scandinavian design, or want superb safety equipment as standard.
Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging, dynamic handling like the BMW 5 Series Touring, need maximum boot space like the Mercedes E-Class Estate, or seek the premium feel of German competitors.
Competitive Position: The Volvo V90 is an excellent premium estate car that stands out for its comfort, safety, and Scandinavian design philosophy. Whilst the BMW 5 Series Touring offers superior driving dynamics and the Mercedes E-Class Estate provides more boot space, the V90 excels as a comfortable, practical family car with outstanding safety credentials. The Audi A6 Avant is equally refined, but the V90's focus on long-distance comfort and its diverse engine options, including plug-in hybrids, make it a compelling choice for those prioritising practicality and safety over sportiness.

5 Overall rating
(2 reviews)Best car I've owned. Comfortable, smooth ride, spacious and easy driving.
I had a Volvo v90, and foolishly downsized to a small people carrier. I soon realised my mistake and have now repurchased my Volvo V90 inscription, which will stay with me. Its comfortable, spacious, economical on fuel and has all bells.
