Volvo V90 (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfortable on long journeys | Not all that exciting to drive |
| Superb safety equipment | A Mercedes, BMW or Audi feels more premium |
| Practical boot space and cabin design | Diesels powerful but gruff-sounding |
Quick Summary
The Volvo V90 (2016-present) is a premium estate car that prioritises comfort, practicality, and safety. With 560 litres of boot space and a sloping rear windscreen that compromises capacity slightly, it offers generous room for passengers and luggage. The cabin design is clean and uncluttered, featuring a portrait-shaped nine-inch Sensus touchscreen infotainment system. Volvo's commitment to safety is evident, with a five-star Euro NCAP rating and the City Safety autonomous emergency braking system fitted as standard across the range.
The V90 is all about comfort rather than handling finesse, making it ideal for long-distance driving. Engine options have evolved significantly, with early models offering D4 and D5 diesels, later supplemented by T4, T5, and T6 petrols. From 2020 onwards, all engines feature mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid technology, with outputs ranging from 194bhp to 335bhp. Diesel engines deliver strong performance and good fuel economy, whilst petrols are quieter but thirstier. Plug-in hybrids offer the best balance of performance and efficiency when regularly charged. Running costs vary by engine choice, with D4 diesels achieving around 45mpg in real-world driving and plug-in hybrids offering exceptional economy on short trips.
Best for: Families seeking a comfortable, practical, and safe premium estate car for long journeys, and buyers prioritising cabin comfort and advanced safety features over driving excitement.
Not ideal for: Those wanting an engaging driving experience comparable to a BMW 5 Series Touring, buyers seeking maximum boot space like a Mercedes E-Class Estate, or those desiring a more premium feel than Volvo offers.

4.7 Overall rating
(6 reviews)I had a Volvo v90, and foolishly downsized to a small people carrier. I soon realised my mistake and have now repurchased my Volvo V90 inscription, which will stay with me. Its comfortable, spacious, economical on fuel and has all bells.
Absolutely stunning car inside & out. The Bursting blue was a £1500 extra but it really does just burst. It’s very eye catching and love my new ride!
Works well. Easy to use. Prompt replies. Worth having a go with!
Good price good contact just a change on model variants for me on this occasion!
I consider that BLIS should be fitted as a standard item, I have had Volvos for the past 24 years Due to the safety and reliability aspects.
