Volvo V90 (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Comfortable on long journeys | Less exciting to drive than rivals |
| Superb safety equipment | Rivals have larger boots |
| Stylish looks and spacious cabin | Diesel engines can sound gruff |
Quick Summary
The Volvo V90 (2016-present) is a premium estate car that successfully blends style, practicality, and exceptional comfort. As Volvo's flagship estate, it offers a spacious and beautifully designed cabin with a clean, uncluttered look. There's generous room for passengers and a 560-litre boot, which, while substantial, is slightly smaller than key rivals like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate. The V90 prioritises a relaxed and comfortable driving experience over sporty handling, making it an outstanding choice for covering long distances with ease.
Initially launched with powerful and economical diesel engines, the range has evolved to include petrol, mild hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options, reflecting changing market demands. True to the brand's reputation, safety is a standout feature, with the V90 earning a five-star Euro NCAP rating and featuring advanced driver aids like Pilot Assist. While early diesel engines can sound gruff under acceleration and the touchscreen infotainment system can be fiddly, the V90 remains one of the best premium estates, offering luxury, top-tier safety, and a comfortable ride.
Best for: Buyers prioritising safety, long-distance comfort, and a stylish, understated design in a premium estate. Also good for those wanting frugal diesel or advanced plug-in hybrid options.
Not ideal for: Drivers seeking the most engaging handling (like a BMW 5 Series Touring) or the absolute maximum boot space (like a Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate).

The Verdict
You should buy the V90 if: You want a premium estate car that excels in safety, long-distance comfort, and has a stylish, minimalist cabin.
Consider alternatives if: You want a more engaging and sporty drive (BMW 5 Series Touring) or need the largest possible boot (Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate).
Competitive Position: The Volvo V90 is a formidable contender in the premium estate market. It carves its own niche by focusing on comfort, safety, and Scandinavian design, rather than outright sportiness. While rivals may offer sharper handling or more cargo space, the V90's blend of luxury, practicality, and advanced safety technology makes it a highly desirable and sensible choice for families seeking a sophisticated and secure vehicle.

4.7 Overall rating
(6 reviews)I had a Volvo v90, and foolishly downsized to a small people carrier. I soon realised my mistake and have now repurchased my Volvo V90 inscription, which will stay with me. Its comfortable, spacious, economical on fuel and has all bells.
Absolutely stunning car inside & out. The Bursting blue was a £1500 extra but it really does just burst. It’s very eye catching and love my new ride!
Works well. Easy to use. Prompt replies. Worth having a go with!
Good price good contact just a change on model variants for me on this occasion!
I consider that BLIS should be fitted as a standard item, I have had Volvos for the past 24 years Due to the safety and reliability aspects.
