Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2026 review | Luxury and technology in a potent package

Pros and cons
What we like
Hugely desirable and luxurious
Tech-heavy interior
Tax-efficient plug-in hybrid
What to consider
The S-Class tends to depreciate heavily
Expensive to buy
Fiddly touch-sensitive controls
The CarGurus verdict
It could be argued the revised seventh-generation S-Class is getting too clever for its own good, with a screen-dominated interior rather than a cabin that exudes outright quality and luxury. It’s still a mighty good machine, though: one that will keep you calm on long distance journeys, and insulate you from the noise outside in stop-start traffic. The pre-facelift examples are extremely capable in all the areas that truly matter, too.
Whether you’re driving the car yourself or sitting in the back seat, it’s impossible to ignore the precise handling, extremely comfortable ride and lavish interior of the S-Class. It’s doing enough to stand its ground against rivals, and remains one of the finest luxury cars around.

What owners say
"The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is hailed by owners as a top-tier luxury car with stunning features and a delightful driving experience. Many appreciate its comfort and performance, especially on long drives, while some drivers have mentioned that the boot capacity can be inadequate for large items. Overall, it's considered a good value for money in the luxury segment."
I used to drive an "E" class and when I was driving it I would look down the bonnet and see the unmistakable Mercedes-Benz badge, and I knew that my life was a success. Once I get myself an "S" Class, I will feel like I have conquered the world
9 June 2025What more could you want in a car like this? There is nothing missing.
12 February 2025The car was in excellent condition throughout. The only issue for me was the boot capacity. Too small for my business requirements

15 September 2021This car is pure luxury. It will be the envy of all of your neighbours. The fuel economy is very pleasing. The diesel engines are so quiet yet so powerful when required. The boot space is immense. As is the leg room for the rear seated passengers. Buy one. I promise you that you will not regret it
18 December 2022Once you sit behind the wheel of your S class all of your cares drift away as you cruise down the road in almost perfect silence. As for me I listen to Pavarotti on the CD player. Sheer Bliss
2 June 2023The features in this car are stunning, the car itself says luxury. Great value for money.
13 March 2021This is the best car in the world simple as that. Its hands down better than the 7 series and
7 March 2021Comfy, economical drive. Wish I had bought sooner but hey.
5 February 2022Good condition and the two price reductions make this an attractive proposition. Negative, disappointing Trade in price.
20 December 2020This is a dream car for families and business use
18 July 2022Three things to know
- The Rear Comfort Package Plus, available on the facelifted AMG Line Premium Plus Executive model, turns the back of the S-Class into a living room. There are cushioned head rests, electric sun blinds on the side windows and rear window, fully reclining, massaging seats (including for your calf muscles), plus belt feeders so you don’t have to stretch too far for the seatbelt. All for a very reasonable £8,000.
- A big upgrade for facelift S-Class models is the inclusion of the MBUX Superscreen, where the instrument display measures 12.3-inches, the central infotainment screen measures 14.4 inches, and the passenger also gets a 12.3-inch display. That passenger screen includes a shield function, to stop the driver getting distracted by whatever the passenger might be watching, plus a selfie camera. Because what every passenger needs is a built-in selfie camera.
- There’s no fully electric S-Class – you’ll have to buy a Mercedes EQS to get close to that experience – but every facelifted S-Class uses hybrid power. With pre-facelift S-Class models, there’s a decent choice of petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains, plus the ultra-fast AMG S63e.
Which one to buy
- If you’re only ever driving yourself: A standard-length S-Class will be a sublime road car with any powertrain. For pre-facelift cars , it may be worth getting an AMG Line Premium example, as there’s a nicer sound system and a 3D look to the 12.3-inch driver display. Still, the ‘entry-level’ AMG Line Premium model will still be exceptional on any journey. On facelift cars, any trim level will afford you excellent tech up-front.
- If you want a diesel: For a proper choice, at the moment you’ll have to look at pre-facelift examples of the seventh-generation S-Class. There have been three S-Class diesels: the S350d, S400d and S450d. All are excellent, but for a balance of economy and grunt, the S400d may be the best way to go. It has 362bhp and 553lb ft of torque, enough to accelerate to 62mph in 5.6 seconds and also also manage nearly 46mpg. The only diesel available in the facelift car is the S350d 4Matic, which has 309bhp and 479lb ft of torque. It can accelerate to 62mph in 5.4 seconds and achieve 42-44mpg.
- If you’re going to be chauffeured: Putting to one side a Maybach, no matter which powertrain you choose, an upgrade to the AMG Line Premium Plus Executive version is worth it. With facelift cars, you’ll enjoy four-zone climate control, meaning you can set the exact temperature you want in either back seat. You also get wireless phone charging, two USB-C ports and a wireless MBUX control, allowing you to take command of the car’s infotainment system. The aforementioned Rear Comfort Package Plus would also be well worth having. For pre-facelift cars, we’d again recommend the AMG Line Premium Plus Executive trim, with its electric sun blinds, electric foot rest, wireless charging and MBUX remote control.
