2025 MG IM5 and MG IM6: styling and dimensions
If you’re familiar with the Chinese car market you may recognise the MG IM5 and MG IM6 since they have been on sale in China as the IM L6 and IM LS6 since 2024 and 2023 respectively.
IM (which stands for Intelligence in Motion) is a standalone brand that is majority-owned by SAIC Motor, which also owns MG. It has been producing cars since 2022 and the MG IM5 and IM6 models sold in the UK are all-but-identical to those on sale in China and other international markets as IM models. They even have the same badges on the bonnet, tailgate and steering wheel, although UK cars also have a discreet MG logo on the tailgate.
The IM5 has a similar shape to the Tesla Model 3, but with curvier bodywork that has echoes of the Porsche Taycan at the side and Aston Martin Vantage at the rear. The IM6 has the same styling cues but is taller and chunkier, with a classic SUV coupe profile.
Although they’re priced to compete with the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, the MG IM5 and IM6 are in fact closer in size to the larger Model S and Model X, and are considerably larger than most other mid-size hatchback, saloon or SUV models.
2025 MG IM5 and MG IM6: interior design and practicality
MG says that its IM models are ‘defined by technology-led, premium cabins’ and they have the kind of design and features you’d expect of £40k+ cars, with a bare minimum of switches, a pared-back look and large digital displays.
A 26.3-inch infotainment display stretches across most of the top of the dashboard, while there’s also a 10.5-inch touchscreen on the centre console. Both models have artificial leather upholstery and a reclining rear seat back as standard.
A boot capacity of 457 litres to the load cover puts the IM5 behind rivals such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 for load space, although in isolation it’s a decent size. There’s also a diddy 18-litre frunk that’s large enough to hold charging cables but not much more.
The IM6’s SUV bodywork gives it a much roomier 665-litre boot capacity, as well as a 32-litre frunk.
2025 MG IM5 and MG IM6: motors, batteries and dynamics
As with most rival cars (including the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y), the IM5 and IM6 are available with a choice of battery options. The entry-level IM5 has a 75kWh battery and rear-wheel drive, giving a maximum official range of 304 miles and a 0-62mph time of 6.8 seconds.
Moving up to the Long Range model gets you a hefty 100kWh battery that gives a maximum range of 441 miles that gives it one of the longest ranges of any new car on sale in the UK. It also has a 0-62mph time of just 4.9 seconds. For the fastest IM5, however, you need to go for the Performance model. It has the same 100kWh battery but adds an extra motor on the front axle for four-wheel drive, a 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds and a maximum range of 357 miles.
The IM6 isn’t available with the entry-level 75kWh battery from launch, although this configuration is available in other markets. Instead it will be offered with the same Long Range or Performance battery formats as the IM5. Acceleration and range figures are slightly down on the IM5 due to its extra bulk, with a maximum of 388 miles on a full charge for the Long Range model and a 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds for the Performance model.
Maximum charging speed for the 75kWh battery is a reasonable 153kW but all variants with the 100 kWh battery can charge at up to 396kW, giving a 10%-80% charge time of just 17 minutes.
All IM5 and IM6 models have a four-wheel steering system that turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction at low speed to give a smaller turning circle than a VW Polo. They also have a ‘One Touch’ function where a single press on the touchscreen enables the car to park, pull out of a parking space or reverse down a street by itself.
