Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Evocative looks	Awkward driving position
Responsive engines	Tight for rear-seat space
More reliable than reputation suggests	Poor result in Euro NCAP safety tests

Quick Summary

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010-2020) is an emotive Italian hatchback that resurrects a famous name from Alfa Romeo's past. Praised for its handsome styling and responsive engines, it received a facelift in 2016 with a honeycomb grille, new-look headlights, and updated interior. The Giulietta offers a range of petrol and diesel engines, from the lively 118bhp 1.4 TB to the serious 232bhp 1750 TBi Cloverleaf hot hatch capable of 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds. However, it suffers from an awkward driving position, tight rear-seat space, and excessive road noise on motorways, making it less practical than contemporary rivals.

Running costs are reasonable, particularly with diesel engines achieving around 55mpg, whilst petrol engines typically deliver high 30s to mid-30s fuel economy. Insurance groups start from 16 of 50 for entry-level models, and pre-April 2017 registered diesels may qualify for zero Vehicle Excise Duty. The post-2016 facelifted models are preferable, offering better equipment and interior finish. Whilst the Giulietta is engaging to drive with a pleasingly sporty exhaust note, it doesn't match the fluidity of a Ford Focus or the refinement of a Volkswagen Golf. Reliability is generally better than Alfa Romeo's reputation suggests, though comfort and safety remain concerns.

Best for: Buyers seeking an emotive, stylish Italian hatchback with responsive engines, those who prioritise driving engagement, and high-mileage drivers opting for diesel variants.

Not ideal for: Drivers requiring maximum rear-seat space, those seeking premium refinement and motorway comfort, buyers prioritising safety ratings, or those who struggle to find a comfortable driving position.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Giulietta if: You seek an emotive, stylish Italian hatchback with responsive engines, prioritise driving engagement, or need a diesel variant for high-mileage driving.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum rear-seat space, seek premium refinement and motorway comfort, prioritise safety ratings, or struggle to find a comfortable driving position.

Competitive Position: The Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010-2020) occupies a unique position in the compact hatchback market, offering Italian style and engaging driving dynamics at a competitive price point. Whilst it trails the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus in expert ratings and overall refinement, it matches or exceeds them in user satisfaction. The Giulietta's main appeal lies in its evocative design and responsive engines, particularly the Cloverleaf hot hatch variant. However, prospective buyers must accept compromises in practicality, comfort, and safety compared to German rivals. For those willing to overlook these shortcomings in favour of character and driving engagement, the Giulietta represents excellent value in the used market.
