Alfa Romeo MiTo (2008-2018) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Distinctive styling	Not as fun to drive as an Alfa should be
Frugal diesels	Cheap-looking, cramped cabin
Sporty driving position	No five-door version

Quick Summary

The Alfa Romeo MiTo (2008-2018) is a three-door premium supermini designed to challenge the MINI Cooper and Audi A1. With distinctive styling inspired by Alfa's design heritage, featuring a shield-shaped grille, bug-eyed headlights, and elegant body lines, the MiTo certainly turns heads. However, the stylish exterior is undermined by a cramped interior with cheap-feeling plastics and limited rear space. The driving position is pleasantly low and sporty, but practicality suffers due to the three-door configuration and awkward rear access.

The MiTo was available with various petrol and diesel engines throughout its decade-long production run. The 1.3-litre diesel is the most economical, achieving around 65-70mpg in real-world driving, whilst the 1.4-litre petrol turbo is peppy and well-suited to the small car. However, the handling lacks the engagement expected from an Alfa, with vague steering and unsettled ride quality. Reliability concerns and interior build quality that doesn't match rivals like the Audi A1 further diminish its appeal. The MiTo offers style and frugal running costs, but lacks the substance to truly compete in this competitive segment.

Best for: Buyers prioritising distinctive styling and economical diesel engines, and those seeking a sporty driving position in a premium supermini.

Not ideal for: Drivers wanting engaging handling, spacious rear seating, or those requiring five-door practicality. Also not recommended for buyers concerned about reliability or seeking premium interior quality.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the MiTo if: You prioritise distinctive styling and economical diesel engines, and seek a sporty driving position in a premium supermini.

Consider alternatives if: You want engaging handling, spacious rear seating, five-door practicality, or premium interior quality and reliability.

Competitive Position: The Alfa Romeo MiTo (2008-2018) struggles in a highly competitive supermini market. Whilst its distinctive styling and frugal diesel engines are appealing, it falls short against rivals in key areas. The Ford Fiesta offers better driving dynamics and value, the Audi A1 provides superior build quality and interior materials, and the MINI delivers more engaging handling and a more upmarket cabin. Reliability concerns with both Alfa Romeo as a brand and the MiTo specifically further undermine its appeal. For most buyers, one of these alternatives represents a more sensible choice.
