Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exciting to drive, especially the Quadrifoglio | Cramped in the back |
| Good looks | Brittle ride |
| High quality cabin | Thirsty petrol engines |
Quick Summary
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) is a stylish mid-sized SUV that successfully combines Italian design flair with engaging driving dynamics. Unlike many rivals that prioritise utility over sportiness, the Stelvio delivers sharp handling, responsive steering, and a well-appointed interior featuring high-quality materials such as aluminium and wood. The 8.8-inch infotainment screen includes smartphone connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, whilst the cabin quality rivals premium competitors, though it falls slightly short of the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. With a 525-litre boot expanding to 1,600 litres with rear seats folded, it offers practical space for families, though the sloping roofline limits rear headroom and legroom compared to rivals like the Land Rover Discovery Sport.
Engine options include turbocharged petrol units (197bhp or 276bhp) and diesel variants (187bhp or 207bhp), with the range-topping Quadrifoglio featuring a formidable 503bhp twin-turbocharged V6. However, the Stelvio's sporting credentials come at a cost: the firm ride can make longer journeys wearing, and fuel economy lags behind some competitors, with petrol engines averaging around 30mpg and diesels approximately 44mpg in official figures. Running costs are substantial, with VED charges particularly steep for models costing over £40,000 from new. As a used car, the Stelvio represents an exciting choice for enthusiasts willing to prioritise driving engagement over practicality and economy, though potential buyers should be aware of Alfa Romeo's reputation for reliability issues.
Best for: Driving enthusiasts seeking a stylish, engaging SUV with premium cabin quality, and those willing to prioritise performance and design over practicality and running costs.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing spacious rear accommodation, those prioritising fuel economy and low running costs, or those concerned about brand reliability and long-distance comfort.

| Alfa Romeo Stelvio | 3/5 | 4.2/5 | 26.2% | 3.9/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Stelvio if: You're a driving enthusiast seeking a stylish, engaging SUV with premium cabin quality, and willing to prioritise performance and design over practicality and running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You need spacious rear accommodation, prioritise fuel economy and low running costs, or are concerned about brand reliability and long-distance comfort.
Competitive Position: The Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) stands apart in the mid-sized SUV segment through its distinctive Italian design and engaging driving dynamics. Whilst the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 offer superior overall ratings and better value propositions, the Stelvio delivers a more exciting and characterful driving experience. The Land Rover Discovery Sport provides greater practicality and rear space. However, for buyers prioritising style, performance, and driving engagement over conventional practicality and economy, the Stelvio remains a compelling choice, particularly the thrilling Quadrifoglio variant. Its main drawback is Alfa Romeo's reliability reputation, which may deter some buyers despite the car's undeniable appeal.

4.3 Overall rating
(4 reviews)Car is a proper driving car, great handling and plenty space for a mid size SUV. Can’t think of any faults apart from a lack of dealership’s if something went wrong.
Its a very desirable car, but misses out on certain tech, such as HUD, Blind Spot alerts & also very confusing model variants. Im not sure if lack of touch screen on infotainment is good or not though. Personal choice, I guess.
Why mainly dark or black interiors which I find to be totally drab and unattrctive and which is my reason for only four stars. , Otherwise whilst not as rounded as the Porsche Macan it is in my opinion a much superior sports car like drive with the deisel engine producing both performance and economy and overall very enjoyable.
Great loking hopt it is reliable. Looks incredible value.
