Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Exciting to drive, especially the Quadrifoglio	Cramped in the back
Good looks	Brittle ride
High quality cabin	Thirsty petrol engines

Quick Summary

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) is a mid-sized SUV that successfully combines Italian design flair with engaging driving dynamics. Unlike many rivals that prioritise utility over sportiness, the Stelvio delivers a sharp, responsive driving experience with impressive handling for its class. The exterior features sleek lines and a purposeful stance, whilst the interior showcases high-quality materials including aluminium and wood with tactile finishes. An 8.8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity comes standard across all models, alongside DAB digital radio and Bluetooth.

However, the Stelvio's sporting credentials come with compromises. The sloping roofline restricts rear headroom and legroom, making it less practical than rivals like the Land Rover Discovery Sport or Volvo XC60. The firm suspension, whilst enhancing cornering ability, results in a brittle ride that can prove tiring on longer journeys. Fuel economy is modest, with petrol engines averaging around 30mpg and diesels around 44mpg in official figures, though real-world consumption is typically lower. The range-topping Quadrifoglio variant offers a thrilling 503bhp twin-turbocharged V6 engine for enthusiasts willing to accept high running costs.

Best for: Enthusiastic drivers seeking an engaging SUV with distinctive Italian styling, those prioritising driving dynamics over practicality, and buyers interested in the performance-focused Quadrifoglio variant.

Not ideal for: Families needing spacious rear accommodation, drivers prioritising comfort on long journeys, budget-conscious buyers concerned with fuel economy, or those seeking maximum boot space.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Stelvio if: You're an enthusiastic driver seeking an engaging SUV with distinctive Italian styling, prioritising driving dynamics over practicality, or interested in the thrilling Quadrifoglio performance variant.

Consider alternatives if: You need spacious rear accommodation, prioritise comfort on long journeys, are budget-conscious about fuel economy, or require maximum boot space for family use.

Competitive Position: The Alfa Romeo Stelvio occupies a unique position in the mid-sized SUV market, offering exceptional driving dynamics and striking design that few rivals match. Whilst the BMW X3 and Land Rover Discovery Sport score higher overall, they prioritise different values. The X3 excels in refinement and quality, the Discovery Sport in practicality and versatility. The Stelvio's firm ride and cramped rear seats are genuine drawbacks for family buyers, yet for those valuing engagement and style, it remains a compelling choice. Its value proposition is competitive, though reliability concerns associated with the Alfa Romeo brand may deter some buyers.
