Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exciting to drive, especially the Quadrifoglio | Cramped in the back |
| Good looks | Brittle ride |
| High quality cabin | Thirsty petrol engines |
Quick Summary
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) is an SUV that prioritises design and driving dynamics, aiming to infuse the popular segment with Alfa Romeo's sporting DNA. It boasts a sleek profile and sharp lines, avoiding the 'box on wheels' look. The interior features high-quality materials like aluminium and wood, with a well-laid-out dashboard centered around an 8.8-inch infotainment screen offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While its cabin quality is impressive, it might not quite match premium rivals like the Audi Q5 or BMW X3. Practicality takes a back seat to its sporty design, with a sloping roofline limiting rear headroom and legroom for taller adults, though average-sized passengers and children will find sufficient space. Its 525-litre boot (1,600 litres with seats folded) is slightly smaller than some rivals but ample for a family of four.
Driving the Stelvio is an engaging experience, offering impressive handling and a fine sense of balance for an SUV, with quick-reacting steering that enthusiastic drivers will appreciate. However, this sharpness comes at the cost of a somewhat brittle ride, especially on larger wheels, which can detract from long-distance comfort. Engine options include 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol units (197bhp or 276bhp) and 2.2-litre diesels (187bhp or 207bhp), with the range-topping Quadrifoglio boasting a 503bhp twin-turbo V6 for ballistic performance. All models feature an 8.8-inch touchscreen with sat-nav, DAB radio, and smartphone connectivity. Running costs are not the lowest; official fuel economy figures range from around 44mpg for diesels to 30mpg for petrols, and 28.8mpg for the Quadrifoglio, with real-world figures often lower. Most variants also incur higher VED due to exceeding the £40,000 new car threshold.
Best for: Drivers who prioritise engaging driving dynamics and distinctive Italian design, especially those seeking a performance SUV like the Quadrifoglio.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising rear passenger space and comfort over long distances, those sensitive to a firm ride, or those concerned about running costs and brand reliability.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alfa Romeo Stelvio | 3/5 | 4.2/5 | 25.9% | 3.9/5 |
| BMW X3 | 5/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.0% | 4.5/5 |
| Land Rover Discovery Sport | 4/5 | 4.0/5 | 35.0% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 35.1% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Stelvio if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics and distinctive Italian design, especially if you're seeking a performance SUV like the Quadrifoglio.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise rear passenger space and comfort over long distances, are sensitive to a firm ride, or are concerned about running costs and brand reliability.
Competitive Position: The Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) stands out in the crowded mid-sized SUV market for its striking design and exceptional driving dynamics, offering a more engaging experience than many rivals. While its cabin quality is high and it provides ample boot space, it compromises on rear passenger comfort and ride quality, which can be firm. Potential buyers should also consider Alfa Romeo's reputation for reliability and the higher running costs associated with its performance-oriented engines. Despite these trade-offs, the Stelvio offers a unique proposition for those who value flair and driving excitement above all else.

4.3 Overall rating
(4 reviews)Car is a proper driving car, great handling and plenty space for a mid size SUV. Can’t think of any faults apart from a lack of dealership’s if something went wrong.
Its a very desirable car, but misses out on certain tech, such as HUD, Blind Spot alerts & also very confusing model variants. Im not sure if lack of touch screen on infotainment is good or not though. Personal choice, I guess.
Why mainly dark or black interiors which I find to be totally drab and unattrctive and which is my reason for only four stars. , Otherwise whilst not as rounded as the Porsche Macan it is in my opinion a much superior sports car like drive with the deisel engine producing both performance and economy and overall very enjoyable.
Great loking hopt it is reliable. Looks incredible value.
