Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exciting to drive, especially the Quadrifoglio | Cramped in the back |
| Good looks | Brittle ride |
| High quality cabin | Thirsty petrol engines |
Quick Summary
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2017-present) is a mid-sized SUV that successfully combines sporting credentials with practical family transport. Designed to emphasise both design and driving dynamics, the Stelvio features a sleek, attractive profile with sharp lines and a purposeful stance. The interior showcases high-quality materials including aluminium and wood, with an 8.8-inch infotainment screen offering smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Whilst cabin quality doesn't quite match the Audi Q5 or BMW X3, it remains impressively appointed for the class.
The Stelvio's handling is genuinely impressive for an SUV, delivering fine balance and excellent grip with super-quick steering response that enthusiastic drivers will appreciate. However, this sportiness comes at a cost: the ride is notably firm, particularly on larger wheels, making extended cruising less comfortable. A 525-litre boot expands to 1,600 litres with rear seats folded, though rear headroom and legroom are limited by the sloping roofline. Engine options include turbocharged petrol units (197bhp or 276bhp) and diesel variants (187bhp or 207bhp), with the range-topping Quadrifoglio offering a formidable 503bhp twin-turbocharged V6. Running costs are substantial, with petrol engines averaging around 30mpg and diesels around 44mpg in official figures, though real-world consumption is typically lower.
Best for: Enthusiastic drivers seeking an SUV with genuine sporting appeal, those prioritising design and cabin quality, and buyers interested in the thrilling Quadrifoglio variant.
Not ideal for: Families needing spacious rear accommodation, drivers prioritising comfort on long journeys, or those seeking economical running costs and low fuel consumption.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alfa Romeo Stelvio | 3/5 | 4.0/5 | 28.9% | 3.9/5 |

| Land Rover Discovery Sport | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.7% | 4.5/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 33.5% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Stelvio if: You're an enthusiastic driver seeking an SUV with genuine sporting appeal, prioritise design and cabin quality, or are interested in the thrilling Quadrifoglio variant.
Consider alternatives if: You need spacious rear accommodation, prioritise comfort on long journeys, or seek economical running costs and low fuel consumption.
Competitive Position: The Alfa Romeo Stelvio occupies a unique position in the mid-sized SUV market, offering distinctive Italian design and engaging driving dynamics that few rivals can match. Whilst it trails competitors like the BMW X3, Land Rover Discovery Sport, and Audi Q5 in overall ratings and value proposition, the Stelvio's sporting character and premium cabin appeal to drivers who value driving enjoyment over practicality and economy. Its firm ride and cramped rear accommodation are genuine drawbacks, and Alfa Romeo's reliability reputation remains a concern for some buyers. However, for those willing to prioritise flair and excitement over conventional SUV virtues, the Stelvio delivers a genuinely rewarding ownership experience.

4 Overall rating
(2 reviews)Car is a proper driving car, great handling and plenty space for a mid size SUV. Can’t think of any faults apart from a lack of dealership’s if something went wrong.
Its a very desirable car, but misses out on certain tech, such as HUD, Blind Spot alerts & also very confusing model variants. Im not sure if lack of touch screen on infotainment is good or not though. Personal choice, I guess.
