Audi A1 (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Understated good looks | Pricey compared to similar cars with mainstream badges |
| Very practical for a small car | Firm ride when fitted with big alloy wheels |
| Free-revving petrol engines | No electric or hybrid version |
Quick Summary
The Audi A1 (2018-present) is a premium small hatchback that proves a compact car can feel genuinely upmarket. The second-generation model introduces a five-door-only Sportback body, offering improved practicality over its predecessor with a generous 335-litre boot and comfortable rear seating for two tall adults. It delivers the solidity and lustre of the Audi badge at a more accessible price point, with a range of sweet, free-revving petrol engines from the economical 1.0-litre 25 TFSI through to the spirited 2.0-litre 40 TFSI. The interior is tech-rich, featuring digital dials and an 8.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.
The A1 offers a composed, stable driving experience with pliant ride comfort and predictable handling, making it equally suited to town driving and motorway miles. Real-world fuel economy ranges from 40-45mpg on smaller engines to around 35mpg on the 40 TFSI. Insurance is reasonable, and the A1 holds its value exceptionally well compared to mainstream rivals. Running costs are competitive, with affordable servicing plans available and common tyre sizes. Whilst pricier than alternatives like the VW Polo and Fiat 500, the A1 feels like a genuinely grown-up car that rewards careful specification with excellent value and premium appeal.
Best for: Buyers seeking a premium small car with excellent practicality, those valuing understated design and quality interiors, and drivers who prioritise comfort and composure over outright handling thrills.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious shoppers seeking the cheapest small car option, those wanting an electric or hybrid powertrain, or drivers prioritising sharp handling dynamics over comfort.

The Verdict
You should buy the A1 if: You seek a premium small car with excellent practicality, value understated design and quality interiors, and prioritise comfort and composure over outright handling thrills.
Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious and seeking the cheapest small car option, want an electric or hybrid powertrain, or prioritise sharp handling dynamics over comfort.
Competitive Position: The Audi A1 (2018-present) is a compelling choice in the premium small car segment, offering superior interior quality and practicality compared to the Fiat 500, whilst matching the VW Polo and MINI on overall ratings. It holds its value exceptionally well, rivalling the MINI in depreciation resistance. Whilst the MINI offers more engaging handling and the Polo provides excellent value, the A1 strikes an impressive balance between premium feel, practical space, and composed driving dynamics. For buyers willing to invest slightly more for a genuinely grown-up small car experience, the A1 represents outstanding value in the used market.

4.7 Overall rating
(8 reviews)It is a very good car for me as I'm a beginner, stylish and fast, brilliant 1st car
perfect great value, couldnt be more happy, stunning car condition
I loved it! Nice drive, compact, comfortable and stylish and hit all of my needs.
Lovely simple design. Unfortunately no rear parking sensors! Good value for an upmarket car
High quality interior, in my opinion, better than the current model that replaces it. Refined engine and transmission (7 speed steptronic). Be careful which suspension/wheel set up you go for. We traded in another A1 for this example as the other had S Line sports suspension and very low profile tyres, giving a harsh ride. If you prefer comfort over outright handling, opt for the softer suspension and higher profile tyres, makes a world of difference.
