Audi A6 Avant (2025-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Low levels of wind and road noise | Boot is small by class standards |
| Lots of space for passengers | Interior quality not as good as previous A6 |
| Smart styling helps it to stand out | Limited engine range |
Quick Summary
The Audi A6 Avant (2025-present) is a premium estate car that combines elegant styling with a refined driving experience. It offers impressive passenger space with generous leg and head room, plus long, wide-opening rear doors for easy child seat installation. The car excels at covering long distances smoothly and quietly, with excellent wind and road noise suppression. Three powertrain options are available: a 2.0-litre petrol TFSI with front-wheel drive, a 2.0-litre mild hybrid diesel TDI with four-wheel drive, and a plug-in hybrid e-hybrid with four-wheel drive offering up to 63 miles of electric-only range.
However, the A6 Avant falls short in key areas. The boot is surprisingly small for its class at 503 litres (466 litres for diesel, 404 litres for PHEV), making it less spacious than rivals and even smaller than some smaller estates. Fuel economy is modest, with the petrol managing 30-35mpg and the diesel around 40-45mpg in real-world driving. The mild hybrid diesel system can exhibit juddering at low speeds with steering lock applied, and the plug-in hybrid incurs significantly higher company car tax than competitors. Climate controls are accessed via touchscreen rather than physical buttons, which can be fiddly whilst driving.
Best for: Buyers seeking a premium, quiet, and refined estate car for long-distance motorway driving, those prioritising passenger comfort and space, and those wanting the sought-after Audi badge.
Not ideal for: Families needing maximum boot space, budget-conscious buyers seeking excellent fuel economy, company car users opting for the plug-in hybrid, or those preferring physical climate controls.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Audi A6 Avant | 3/5 | 4.2/5 | 31.7% | 4.0/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.3% | 4.4/5 |
| Volvo V90 | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 32.8% | 4.2/5 |
| BMW 5 Series Touring | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.5% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the A6 Avant if: You prioritise a premium, quiet, and refined driving experience for long-distance journeys, value passenger comfort and space, or desire the prestige of the Audi badge.
Consider alternatives if: You need maximum boot space, seek excellent fuel economy, are a company car user considering the plug-in hybrid, or prefer physical climate controls over touchscreen operation.
Competitive Position: The Audi A6 Avant is a capable premium estate that excels at refinement and passenger comfort, but it struggles to compete with rivals in key areas. Its boot is disappointingly small compared to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate and BMW 5 Series Touring, and fuel economy is modest. The Mercedes and BMW both score higher on expert and user ratings, whilst the Volvo V90 achieves an exceptional 5.0 user rating. The A6 Avant's main strength lies in its attractive styling and smooth, quiet motorway manners, making it ideal for those prioritising refinement over practicality. However, for buyers seeking a true family estate with generous boot space and better value, the rivals present a more compelling case.
