Audi A8 (2010-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Delivers the quality and comfort you'd expect of a flagship limo	Hybrid version has a smaller boot and a very short electric range
Cutting edge technology for a luxury car of this era	Not as rewarding to drive as a Jaguar XJ
The S8 is exceptionally fast	High running costs, especially if you choose a petrol

Quick Summary

The Audi A8 (2010-2017), the third-generation model, is a large and luxurious saloon that combines understated elegance with cutting-edge technology. Available in standard and long-wheelbase forms, it offers exceptional build quality, plush materials, and excellent rear legroom. The A8 prioritises comfort and confidence over agility, delivering a composed and stable driving experience. Engine options range from the economical 3.0-litre TDI diesel to the powerful 6.0-litre W12 and the thrilling S8 twin-turbo V8, ensuring there's a model to suit various preferences and budgets.

As a used purchase, the A8 represents outstanding value thanks to significant depreciation from its original premium price. It's jam-packed with features, including Valcona leather, double-glazed windows, LED headlights, and advanced infotainment systems. However, prospective buyers should be aware of high running costs, substantial Vehicle Excise Duty, and premium insurance premiums. The 3.0-litre TDI diesel offers the best balance of performance and economy, whilst the hybrid model provides an alternative for fuel-conscious buyers, though with a smaller boot and limited electric range.

Best for: Luxury car enthusiasts seeking comfort, refinement, and cutting-edge technology; those wanting effortless performance and cruising capability; buyers seeking a prestigious large saloon at a fraction of its original cost.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising dynamic, engaging handling; those seeking low running costs; buyers uncomfortable with premium maintenance expenses; those requiring maximum boot space (especially hybrid models).

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the A8 if: You seek luxury, comfort, and cutting-edge technology; you want effortless performance and a prestigious large saloon; you're willing to accept higher running costs for exceptional refinement and quality.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise dynamic, engaging handling like the Jaguar XJ; you seek lower running costs; you require maximum boot space; you're uncomfortable with premium maintenance expenses.

Competitive Position: The Audi A8 (2010-2017) is an excellent large luxury saloon that offers outstanding value as a used purchase. Whilst the Mercedes-Benz S-Class edges ahead with a higher overall rating and superior technology, and the Jaguar XJ provides more engaging driving dynamics, the A8 strikes an impressive balance between comfort, refinement, and technology. It delivers the quality and prestige expected of a flagship limousine, with a comprehensive range of powerful engines and extensive equipment. For buyers seeking a luxurious, well-equipped cruiser at a fraction of its original cost, the A8 remains a compelling choice, though prospective owners must budget for substantial running costs and premium maintenance.
