Audi A8 (2010-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Delivers the quality and comfort you'd expect of a flagship limo	Hybrid version has a smaller boot and a very short electric range
Cutting edge technology for a luxury car of this era	Not as rewarding to drive as a Jaguar XJ
The S8 is exceptionally fast	High running costs, especially if you choose a petrol

Quick Summary

The Audi A8 (2010-2017), the third-generation model, is a large and luxurious saloon that combines understated elegance with exceptional build quality. Available in standard and long-wheelbase forms, it offers a range of diesel, petrol, and hybrid engines to suit different needs. The interior is spacious and refined, featuring plush materials and advanced technology, though the boot is smaller than some rivals and rear seats cannot be folded. It's a composed and stable cruiser that prioritises comfort and confidence over dynamic driving engagement.

Engine options range from the economical 3.0-litre TDI diesel (the best value choice) to the powerful 6.0-litre W12 and the thrilling S8 twin-turbo V8 with 513bhp. All models feature Valcona leather, double-glazed windows, and LED headlights, with higher trims adding adaptive air suspension, reversing cameras, and premium sound systems. Running costs are substantial, with Vehicle Excise Duty ranging from £165 to £565 annually and insurance in groups 43-50. However, as a secondhand purchase, the A8 represents excellent value for money, offering effortless performance and cutting-edge features at a fraction of its original price.

Best for: Buyers seeking a luxurious, comfortable cruiser with advanced technology, those prioritising refinement and quality, and those wanting serious performance (S8 variant).

Not ideal for: Drivers wanting dynamic, engaging handling, those seeking lower running costs, or buyers requiring a large boot with flexible seating arrangements.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the A8 if: You're seeking a luxurious, comfortable cruiser with advanced technology, prioritising refinement and quality, or wanting serious performance with the S8 variant.

Consider alternatives if: You want dynamic, engaging handling, require lower running costs, or need a large boot with flexible seating arrangements.

Competitive Position: The Audi A8 (2010-2017) is an excellent large luxury saloon that competes well against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series. Whilst the S-Class edges ahead with a marginally higher overall rating, the A8 offers comparable quality, cutting-edge technology, and exceptional user satisfaction. The Jaguar XJ provides more dynamic driving engagement, but the A8 excels in comfort, refinement, and technology. As a secondhand purchase, the A8 represents outstanding value, delivering flagship luxury and performance at a fraction of its original cost, making it one of the finest ways to cover miles in style and comfort.
