Audi Q5 (2008-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Roomy and upmarket inside	Not as fun to drive as a BMW X3
Reasonably efficient for an SUV	Hard ride on large alloys, especially before the 2012 facelift
Tremendous performance of SQ5	Some reliability issues

Quick Summary

The Audi Q5 (2008-2017) is a midsize premium SUV that combines the commanding driving position and practicality of an SUV with the quality, image, and refinement of a luxury saloon. The first generation offers a well-appointed interior with high-quality materials, five spacious seats, and a useful 540-litre boot. Rear seatbacks recline and can slide fore and aft to balance legroom with boot space, making it suitable for families. The SE entry-level model provides excellent equipment including leather seats, cruise control, climate control, and parking sensors, whilst higher trims add sportier styling and enhanced features.

Whilst the Q5 isn't as engaging to drive as the BMW X3, it delivers a prestigious and quiet driving experience. The firm ride on larger alloys can be uncomfortable, particularly on pre-facelift models; the SE version offers better comfort. For those seeking performance, the SQ5 twin-turbo diesel produces 309bhp and reaches 62mph in just over five seconds whilst maintaining reasonable ride quality thanks to its sophisticated suspension. Fuel consumption ranges from around 44mpg for efficient diesels to 30-35mpg for petrol turbos. Service costs are competitive under Audi's fixed-price scheme, and most models feature timing chains requiring minimal maintenance.

Best for: Buyers seeking a prestigious, spacious, and refined premium SUV with strong performance options, and those prioritising upmarket interior quality and quiet refinement.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling dynamics, maximum ride comfort on all trim levels, or those seeking the most dependable luxury SUV option.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Q5 if: You're seeking a prestigious, spacious, and refined premium SUV with strong performance options, and prioritise upmarket interior quality and quiet refinement.

Consider alternatives if: You value engaging handling dynamics, maximum ride comfort on all trim levels, or require the most dependable luxury SUV option.

Competitive Position: The Audi Q5 (2008-2017) is a strong contender in the premium SUV market, offering impressive interior quality, spaciousness, and refinement. Whilst the BMW X3 F25 edges ahead with superior driving dynamics and the Volvo XC60 provides greater comfort, the Q5 remains a prestigious and capable choice. Its competitive pricing and excellent equipment levels make it an attractive option for buyers seeking luxury and practicality. The SQ5 variant also delivers impressive performance for those wanting a more thrilling drive.
