Audi R8 (2016-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Tremendous V10 engine delivers sound and fury	Lacks the exotic appeal of a Ferrari or Lamborghini
Choice of coupe and cabrio body styles	No manual gearbox option
Thrilling to drive, yet easy to live with	High running costs

Quick Summary

The Audi R8 (2016-2024) is an awe-inspiring mid-engined supercar that delivers exceptional engineering and performance. Powered by a magnificent naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine, it produces a spine-tingling mechanical soundtrack and eye-watering performance. Available as both a sleek coupe and an open-top spyder, the R8 combines staggering performance with surprising practicality and composure. The sophisticated suspension and rear-biased Quattro all-wheel-drive system ensure epic grip and composed handling, whilst the responsive steering and impressive braking make it a thrilling yet manageable daily driver.

Despite its supercar credentials, the R8 remains remarkably usable and comfortable for extended journeys, though luggage space is limited at 112 litres. Running costs are substantial, with fuel consumption typically in the mid-teens and premium tyres essential for optimal performance. Insurance premiums will be considerable, and servicing costs reflect its high-performance nature. However, the R8 represents a truly exceptional piece of engineering that delivers an unmatched driving experience, making it a compelling choice for those seeking supercar thrills without sacrificing everyday usability.

Best for: Enthusiasts seeking a naturally aspirated supercar with genuine daily usability, those who value the V10 engine experience, and buyers wanting a choice between coupe and convertible body styles.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising exotic brand appeal, drivers requiring substantial luggage space, or those seeking low running costs.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the R8 if: You're an enthusiast seeking a naturally aspirated supercar with genuine daily usability, value the V10 engine experience, or want a choice between coupe and convertible body styles.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise exotic brand appeal, require substantial luggage space, seek low running costs, or are budget-conscious.

Competitive Position: The Audi R8 (2016-2024) stands as an exceptional mid-engined supercar that rivals the Porsche 911 in performance and engineering excellence. Whilst it may lack the iconic status of a Ferrari or Lamborghini, the R8 compensates with a naturally aspirated V10 engine that delivers unmatched mechanical theatre and genuine usability. Its choice of coupe and convertible body styles, combined with sophisticated handling and surprising practicality, makes it a compelling alternative to more exotic rivals. The R8 represents a unique proposition: a true supercar that doesn't demand sacrifice in everyday drivability.
