Audi S3 (2021-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Safe handling	Dull steering and fussy ride
Strong performance in all weathers	Nothing like as enjoyable to drive as the Volkswagen Golf R
Practical, well made cabin	Expensive to buy

Quick Summary

The Audi S3 (2021-present) is the fourth generation of Audi's performance hatchback, available as both a five-door Sportback and four-door Saloon. It combines a 306bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre engine with four-wheel drive and a dual-clutch paddleshift gearbox, delivering strong straight-line performance in all weather conditions. The Sportback offers a practical 380-litre boot, whilst both versions feature well-appointed, premium cabins with comprehensive technology including MMI Navigation Plus and Audi's Virtual Cockpit. Running costs are reasonable for a performance car, with expected fuel economy around 35mpg in mixed driving and service plans available from £22 per month.

However, this generation represents a step backwards in driving dynamics compared to its predecessor. The steering has become duller and less incisive, whilst the ride quality can be fussy, particularly on the larger 19-inch wheels without adaptive dampers. Whilst the S3 maintains its reputation as a safe, sure-footed performer with a premium interior, it lacks the driver engagement of rivals like the Volkswagen Golf R. The S3 appeals to buyers seeking easy performance and predictable handling rather than those prioritising interactive driving dynamics.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium, four-wheel drive performance car with strong all-weather capability, a well-equipped cabin, and practical space, particularly those loyal to the Audi brand.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging steering and responsive handling, those seeking the best value in the performance hatchback segment, or enthusiasts wanting a true driver's car.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the S3 if: You value premium build quality, four-wheel drive all-weather capability, and a well-equipped cabin, and you prioritise brand loyalty and predictable handling over engaging driving dynamics.

Consider alternatives if: You seek the best driving dynamics, superior value for money, or a true driver's car experience in the performance hatchback segment.

Competitive Position: The Audi S3 (2021-present) occupies a premium position in the performance hatchback market but falls short of its rivals in key areas. Whilst it delivers strong all-weather performance and a luxurious interior, its dull steering and fussy ride represent a regression from the previous generation. The Volkswagen Golf R offers superior driving engagement at a similar price point, whilst the Mercedes-AMG A35 and BMW M135i xDrive provide better value and more rewarding driving experiences. The S3 appeals primarily to Audi enthusiasts seeking premium comfort and predictable performance rather than those prioritising driver involvement or value.
