BMW 1 Series (2011-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Fantastic rear-wheel-drive handling balance	Not very roomy in the back
Classy and well-built cabin	Timing chain wear can lead to a big bill
The ED diesel is very efficient	Three-door models are less practical and harder to sell

Quick Summary

The BMW 1 Series (2011-2019), known as the F20 generation, is a premium family hatchback that delivers an engaging driving experience with its unique rear-wheel-drive layout. This second-generation model improved on its predecessor's cramped rear quarters, though space remains tight compared to mainstream rivals. The interior feels classy and well-built with an intelligently laid-out design, whilst the 360-litre boot provides reasonable practicality for the class. The low driving position is sporty, though it can make judging the car's nose more difficult than in less rakish rivals.

A wide range of engines was available throughout this generation's life, from a fuel-sipping 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol to a fire-breathing 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder with 335bhp. The most efficient 116d ED diesel achieves around 60mpg in day-to-day driving, whilst petrol options like the 116i and 118i deliver around 50mpg and 40mpg respectively. Key to buying a good 1 Series is finding a later example serviced regularly by professional garages, as timing chain issues can prove costly. With its aspirational image, efficient engines, and entertaining drive, the 1 Series offers a more responsive and enjoyable experience than most hatchbacks, though it sacrifices some practicality compared to mainstream alternatives.

Best for: Drivers seeking premium badge appeal with engaging handling, those prioritising driving enjoyment over maximum space, and buyers wanting an efficient yet upmarket family hatchback.

Not ideal for: Families needing maximum rear legroom, buyers concerned about potential timing chain issues, or those preferring three-door models for practicality and resale value.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 1 Series if: You seek premium badge appeal with engaging handling, prioritise driving enjoyment over maximum space, or want an efficient yet upmarket family hatchback.

Consider alternatives if: You need maximum rear legroom, are concerned about potential timing chain issues, or prefer three-door models for practicality and resale value.

Competitive Position: The BMW 1 Series (2011-2019) stands out in the premium hatchback segment with its distinctive rear-wheel-drive handling and classy interior. Whilst the Audi A3 scores higher with users and the Volkswagen Golf offers superior practicality, the 1 Series delivers a more engaging and responsive driving experience. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class lags behind in expert ratings. The 1 Series represents an excellent choice for buyers willing to prioritise driving dynamics and premium feel over maximum space, offering efficient engines and aspirational appeal that justify its position as a compelling alternative to mainstream rivals.
