BMW 5 Series (2010-2016) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exceptional all-round ability | Fairly firm ride on larger alloy wheels |
| Satisfying to drive and comfortable to travel in | Epic running costs of high-performance M5 |
| The 520d hits the sweet spot for performance and economy | Not all models have split/folding rear seats |
Quick Summary
The BMW 5 Series (2010-2016), known as the F10 generation, is an executive saloon that comes close to being the perfect all-rounder. It offers exceptional comfort and space for all occupants, with generous legroom and a substantial boot (520 litres for the saloon, 560 for the Touring estate). While split-folding rear seats were an optional extra, the F10 delivers a highly refined, easy, and rewarding driving experience, especially over long distances, making it a joy to travel in. This generation also received a minor facelift in 2013.
Its engine range is notable for combining power and smoothness with efficiency; the 520d can achieve 60-65mpg, and even the potent 530d and 535d turbodiesels manage around 50mpg. Entry-level SE models are well-equipped, and the optional eight-speed automatic gearbox is class-leading. While the infotainment screen isn't touch-sensitive, BMW's iDrive controller is intuitive. Running costs for the M5 and run-flat tyre replacements can be high, as can insurance, but many models offer low road tax and overall reliability is good for a premium car.
Best for: Drivers seeking a refined, comfortable, and practical executive saloon; those looking for powerful yet efficient engines; buyers who appreciate a rewarding long-distance drive and premium build quality; business users.
Not ideal for: Buyers on a strict budget for running costs (e.g., M5 fuel, run-flat tyres, insurance); those needing standard split-folding rear seats; those preferring modern touchscreen infotainment.
