BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo (2018-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| An interesting alternative to a conventional executive car | The xDrive 4x4 versions cost more to fuel than two-wheel-drive models |
| The hatchback layout is practical and there's plenty of luggage space | Not as compelling to drive as a BMW 5 Series |
| Four-wheel drive is available with some engines | Divisive looks may put you off |
Quick Summary
The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo (2018-2020) is a large and practical executive car that blends tried-and-tested BMW underpinnings with a bigger coupe-like body and a practical hatchback layout. More spacious, practical, advanced and efficient than its predecessor, it offers 610 litres of boot space with rear seats up and 1,800 litres with them folded down. The powered tailgate and flat boot floor make loading straightforward. Available with a choice of 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engines, plus diesel options, all paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, the 6 Series GT delivers comfort and pace in a premium package.
However, whilst the engine line-up is excellent and the car is well equipped and luxurious, it's a big, heavy and uncommunicative machine that doesn't deliver compelling handling. The divisive styling may also deter some buyers. The 630d achieves around 50mpg in real-world conditions, whilst the 640i xDrive manages close to 30mpg. Running costs are reasonable for a premium executive car, though VED premiums apply for the first five years. Despite its drawbacks, the 6 Series GT makes sense for those prioritising comfort, space and relaxation over dynamic driving engagement.
Best for: Buyers seeking a large, practical and relaxing luxury executive car with excellent interior space and a hatchback layout, and those wanting an interesting alternative to conventional saloons.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling, those who dislike its distinctive styling, or buyers seeking a more dynamic driving experience comparable to a BMW 5 Series.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.1% | 4.2/5 |
| Porsche Panamera | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 31.4% | 4.2/5 |
| Tesla Model S | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 32.4% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 36.2% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the 6 Series Gran Turismo if: You're seeking a large, practical and relaxing luxury executive car with excellent interior space and a hatchback layout, or wanting an interesting alternative to conventional saloons.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging handling, dislike its distinctive styling, or require a more dynamic driving experience comparable to a BMW 5 Series.
Competitive Position: The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo (2018-2020) is a distinctive choice in the luxury executive segment, offering unquestionable comfort, accommodation and practicality. Whilst rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Porsche Panamera deliver more compelling driving dynamics and sleeker styling, the 6 Series GT excels in space and versatility. The Tesla Model S offers cutting-edge technology and performance, but at a premium price. For buyers prioritising relaxation, practicality and a unique alternative to conventional saloons, the 6 Series Gran Turismo remains a sensible choice, especially as depreciation has made used examples more accessible.

4.9 Overall rating
(12 reviews)For such a big car it certainly doesnt feel like it. The performance for a big car is incredible so to get decent economy requires some restraint. Very smooth as you would expect from something that costs £60k+ when new. Spec differs so much between cars so read up a bit and happy car hunting.
Overpriced in COVID global market with early stages of recession
The hybrid version which BMW in my view erroneously have decided to sell in Europe but not the Uk would have been the ideal replacement for my 5GT. It looks as if I will have to look at the Audi or Merc ranges . A pity has I and my family, plus the company , have been almost exclusively BMW purchasers for well over 20 years
The car is what I required as a single 60 year old man, style comfort, power and some flair with the top down
Yes, the car has a good value. I enjoy riding it.
