BMW 8 Series (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Quick and handles well	Not as exciting as a Porsche 911
xDrive 4x4 models perform in all weathers	Not as luxurious as a Mercedes S-Class Coupe
Choice of convertible, coupe and four-door body styles	Coupe and convertible are cramped in the back

Quick Summary

The BMW 8 Series (2018-present) is a striking grand tourer that straddles the middle ground between the overtly sporting Porsche 911 and the sumptuous Mercedes S-Class Coupe. This modern iteration revives a name first introduced in 1990, positioning itself as BMW's flagship performance model. Available as a two-door coupe, convertible, or four-door Gran Coupe, it offers a choice of body styles to suit different needs. The M8 Competition variant represents the fastest and most powerful road car BMW has ever produced, delivering truly breathtaking acceleration and performance.

The 8 Series delivers lusty performance across the range, with the entry-level 840d achieving around 40mpg in mixed driving, whilst the M8 Competition realistically manages only 22mpg. All variants incur £475 annual road tax, though more powerful petrol models face a substantial £1,850 first-year rate. Insurance costs are significant, with even the least powerful model sitting in group 44 of 50. The cabin exudes opulence with comprehensive comfort and convenience equipment, though the architecture is somewhat unambitious. Rear seat space in two-door variants is limited, making the Gran Coupe the more practical choice for carrying passengers regularly. Servicing costs can be managed through BMW's fixed-price plans at £30-£45 monthly depending on model.

Best for: Buyers seeking a sophisticated grand tourer combining performance with luxury, those wanting a middle ground between a 911 and S-Class Coupe, and drivers who value choice in body styles and powertrains.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum thrills (like a 911), ultimate luxury (like an S-Class Coupe), or requiring spacious rear seating in coupe and convertible variants.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 8 Series if: You seek a sophisticated grand tourer combining performance with luxury, want a middle ground between a 911 and S-Class Coupe, or value choice in body styles and powertrains.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum thrills like a 911, ultimate luxury like an S-Class Coupe, or require spacious rear seating in coupe and convertible variants.

Competitive Position: The BMW 8 Series neatly splits the difference between its rivals from Porsche and Mercedes, offering an attractive and broadly capable grand tourer. However, it inevitably means no version truly excels in one particular area – neither a thrilling road racer nor a peerless continental cruiser. Whilst quick and well-handling, it lacks the raw excitement of a 911 and the sumptuous refinement of an S-Class Coupe. The cramped rear seats in two-door variants are frustrating given the substantial footprint, though the Gran Coupe addresses this with far more accommodating rear space. For those seeking a balanced performance coupe with multiple body style options, the 8 Series remains a compelling choice.
