BMW X1 Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Beautifully appointed interior	Ride slightly firmer than some rivals
Brilliant on space and practicality	Higher-end models are expensive
Pleasant to drive	Too much desirable kit costs extra

Quick Summary

The BMW X1 is a premium compact SUV that combines practicality with refined driving dynamics. This third-generation model has grown to 4.5 metres in length, offering impressive interior space with a 540-litre boot and comfortable seating for five. The beautifully appointed cabin features high-quality materials, intuitive infotainment with Android Automotive OS, and a range of powertrains including mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrids with up to 56 miles of electric range, and a sporty M35i variant. All models come with an automatic transmission and impressive standard equipment including LED headlights, parking sensors, and autonomous emergency braking.

The X1 excels in practicality with sliding and reclining rear seats, a 60/40 split-fold rear bench, and thoughtful interior touches like rear charging ports and air vents. Driving dynamics are engaging for a family SUV, with the xDrive23i petrol offering particularly good balance between performance and refinement. The plug-in hybrids are particularly desirable for their generous electric range and sophisticated driving experience. Running costs are competitive, with servicing around £900–£1,000 for three years. Insurance groups range from 24 to 35, which is reasonable for this class. However, many desirable features like heated seats and folding mirrors require optional packs, and the ride can feel slightly firm compared to some rivals.

Best for: Families seeking a premium compact SUV with excellent practicality, those wanting a plug-in hybrid with genuine electric range, and drivers prioritising refined interiors and technology.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking the most comfortable ride, those wanting maximum value without option packs, or those preferring removable rear seats for van-like versatility.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the X1 if: You're seeking a premium compact SUV with excellent practicality, desiring a plug-in hybrid with genuine electric range, or prioritising refined interiors and modern technology.

Consider alternatives if: You want the most comfortable ride, seek maximum value without optional extras, or require removable rear seats for van-like versatility.

Competitive Position: The BMW X1 is a strong all-rounder in the premium compact SUV segment, offering one of the classiest interiors and most generous electric range among plug-in hybrids. Whilst the Volvo XC40 and Mercedes-Benz GLA achieve slightly higher user ratings and the XC40 offers superior comfort, the X1 delivers engaging driving dynamics and exceptional practicality. The Audi Q3 is a capable alternative, but the X1's refined powertrain options and sophisticated interior make it a compelling choice for those prioritising premium quality and technology. Its good-deal percentage of 35.8% is notably higher than rivals, offering strong value in this competitive segment.
