BMW X1 (2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Beautifully appointed interior | Ride slightly firmer than some rivals |
| Brilliant on space and practicality | Higher-end models are expensive |
| Pleasant to drive | Too much desirable kit costs extra |
Quick Summary
The current BMW X1 is the third generation of this family crossover SUV, offering an advanced platform with high-tech features and a broad range of mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains. It has grown in size, now measuring 4.5 metres long, making it more spacious than a Nissan Qashqai and impressively roomy for a compact SUV. The interior is beautifully appointed with plush materials, excellent build quality, and a smart, user-friendly design, featuring BMW's latest Operating System 9 on a curved touchscreen.
Practicality is a strong suit, with ample space for adults or children in the rear, two sets of Isofix, and a generous 540-litre boot that even PHEV models retain most of. Driving dynamics are pleasant and confident, with a variety of engine options including punchy petrols, efficient diesels, and plug-in hybrids with electric ranges up to 56 miles. While the ride can be firm at lower speeds, it smooths out at higher speeds, and handling is satisfyingly sporty for a family SUV. Running costs are competitive, though higher-end models and desirable options can make it expensive.
Best for: Buyers seeking a spacious and practical premium family SUV, those wanting a broad choice of efficient powertrains (especially plug-in hybrids with good electric range), and drivers who appreciate a well-appointed interior and confident handling.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising the softest ride comfort (some rivals are more pliant), those on a strict budget (higher-end models and options add up), or those who prefer physical climate controls over touchscreen integration.

The Verdict
You should buy the X1 if: You're looking for a spacious and practical premium family SUV, desire a broad choice of efficient powertrains (especially plug-in hybrids), and appreciate a beautifully appointed interior with confident handling.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the softest ride comfort, are on a strict budget (as higher-end models and options can be expensive), or prefer physical controls over a fully integrated touchscreen.
Competitive Position: The BMW X1 is a strong contender in the compact SUV class, standing out with its impressive roominess, versatile practicality, and a range of efficient powertrains, including highly desirable plug-in hybrids. Its interior quality is among the best, and it offers satisfying driving dynamics, even if the ride can be firmer than some rivals. While it can get pricey with options, its overall package makes it one of the best all-rounders in a very competitive segment.

4.5 Overall rating
(14 reviews)A very great small suv. fantastic car, cant fault it .
Some good features included but missing heated seats, reversing camera, front sensors just to name but a few.
Think the car is in very good condition inside and out maybe a little bit pricey but all in all a very nice car
Lovely car, couple of marks but nothing major. Car doesn’t have electric wing mirrors but good price for low mileage.
This is my favourite car! I like that it is a small SUV, loads of power and a smooth ride.
