BMW X4 (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Coupe-like looks stand out from the SUV crowd	Not as practical as an X3, although that's hardly surprising
Drives well, even if you choose one of the less powerful versions	No plug-in hybrid version
The xDrive30d offers great performance and reasonable economy	Lacks a small petrol engine

Quick Summary

The BMW X4 (2018-present) is a distinctive coupe-SUV that deliberately sacrifices some practicality for bold styling and driver engagement. This second-generation model combines the high-riding stance of an SUV with a rakish roofline and sleek profile, making it stand out in an increasingly crowded market. Despite being slightly less spacious than its X3 sibling, the X4 offers a respectable 525 litres of boot space with seats up, or 1,430 litres with them folded, making real-world compromises minimal for most buyers. All models feature xDrive four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, with M Sport suspension as standard, emphasising the X4's driver-focused character.

The engine range spans from the entry-level 190hp xDrive20d to the formidable 510hp X4 M Competition, which accelerates to 62mph in just 4.1 seconds—quicker than a Porsche 911 Carrera. The xDrive30d strikes an excellent balance, delivering sparkling performance with a 5.8-second 0-62mph time whilst achieving over 40mpg in real-world driving. Running costs vary considerably across the range, with the xDrive20d returning 42.2-45.6mpg and the xDrive30d achieving 38.2-40.9mpg. All X4s exceed the £40,000 threshold for enhanced annual road tax, and BMW servicing is available via monthly payment plans. The X4 appeals to those seeking a bolder alternative to conventional SUVs, offering engaging dynamics and striking aesthetics without severe practical penalties.

Best for: Buyers seeking distinctive styling and engaging driving dynamics, those who prioritise appearance over maximum practicality, and drivers wanting performance without sacrificing everyday usability.

Not ideal for: Families requiring maximum interior space, those seeking plug-in hybrid options, or buyers wanting a small petrol engine alternative.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the X4 if: You seek distinctive styling and engaging driving dynamics, prioritise appearance over maximum practicality, or want performance without sacrificing everyday usability.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum interior space, seek plug-in hybrid options, or prefer a small petrol engine alternative.

Competitive Position: The BMW X4 (2018-present) occupies a unique position in the premium compact SUV segment, offering bold coupe-inspired styling that sets it apart from conventional rivals. Whilst the Porsche Macan and Range Rover Evoque offer comparable user ratings and value propositions, the X4 delivers engaging driving dynamics and striking aesthetics. The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class provides a more traditional SUV approach with similar expert ratings. The X4's xDrive30d engine strikes an impressive balance between performance and economy, making it compelling for drivers seeking a driver-focused alternative to more conservative premium SUVs. Its divisive design ensures it appeals to those wanting to stand out, rather than blend in.
