BMW iX1 (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very classy interior and infotainment system	Not as versatile as some rivals
Good to drive	An expensive option in the class
Efficiency is pretty good	Dimensions aren't as compact as they once were

Quick Summary

The BMW iX1 is the smallest and most affordable electric SUV in BMW's portfolio, sitting on the company's modular FAAR platform. Available with two powertrains—the 308bhp xDrive30 with four-wheel drive and the 201bhp eDrive20 with front-wheel drive—both offer impressive range of up to 290 and 320 miles respectively. Despite its name suggesting a compact vehicle, the iX1 measures 4.5 metres long and is a proper mid-sized family SUV, comparable in size to the Volkswagen Tiguan. With prices from £43,000, it competes directly with its larger sibling, the BMW iX3.

The iX1 excels in practicality with a 490-litre boot, comfortable rear accommodation for six-footers, and a cabin that rivals more expensive models for perceived quality and design. Its infotainment system features a 10.7-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, whilst the adaptive regenerative braking and optional one-pedal driving make it efficient and easy to drive in traffic. Running costs are competitive for the class, with home charging significantly cheaper than public alternatives. However, it faces stiff competition from roomier rivals offering longer ranges at lower prices, though its premium badge and sophisticated driving experience remain compelling for those prioritising quality and refinement.

Best for: Buyers seeking a premium electric family SUV with excellent infotainment and cabin quality, those valuing sophisticated driving dynamics, and families wanting a practical mid-sized EV with a prestigious badge.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising maximum interior space or driving range, or customers seeking the most versatile option in the electric SUV class.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the iX1 if: You prioritise premium quality, sophisticated infotainment, and refined driving dynamics, and you value a prestigious badge in a practical mid-sized family SUV.

Consider alternatives if: You're on a tight budget, require maximum interior space or driving range, or seek the most versatile option in the electric SUV class.

Competitive Position: The BMW iX1 is a comprehensively engineered premium electric SUV that delivers excellent infotainment, cabin finish, and driving refinement. Whilst it faces intense competition from rivals including the Tesla Model Y, Mercedes-Benz EQA, Audi Q4 E-Tron, Skoda Enyaq, and Hyundai Ioniq 5, many offer roomier interiors and longer ranges at lower prices. However, if a premium badge and the quality it brings matter to you, the BMW iX1 deserves serious consideration. Its sophisticated cabin, intuitive technology, and composed driving experience make it one of the finest choices in the premium electric family SUV segment, particularly for those who value refinement over raw practicality.
