Citroën C4 (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
The C4 offers something genuinely different to most hatchback rivals	The likes of the Skoda Octavia have more luggage space
Affordable to buy and run	The infotainment system is fiddly
Plenty of room for the whole family	Finance costs could be more competitive

Quick Summary

The Citroën C4 (2020-present) is a stylish family hatchback that combines practical design with distinctive styling. Available with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine in two power outputs, a 1.5-litre diesel, and a pure electric powertrain offering up to 217 miles of range, it provides versatility for different driving needs. The bold, SUV-inspired design with a sleek, coupe-like roofline is divisive but charming, whilst the 380-litre boot with variable-height floor and 60/40 split rear seats offer genuine practicality for families.

Comfort is the C4's defining characteristic, with a well-designed cabin prioritising user-friendly controls and a supple ride that absorbs rough roads with ease. The electric e-C4 delivers the best driving experience with seamless acceleration and refinement, whilst the petrol and diesel options are competent and economical. Running costs are competitive, with the diesel achieving around 50 mpg and the petrol 40-45 mpg in real-world driving. The e-C4 costs just over 4p per mile to run from a home wallbox. Whilst the infotainment system is fiddly and finance costs could be better, the C4 represents excellent value as a practical, comfortable, and characterful family car.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical family hatchback with distinctive styling, those wanting an affordable electric option, and drivers prioritising comfort over driving dynamics.

Not ideal for: Those wanting class-leading luggage space, buyers seeking the most intuitive infotainment systems, or drivers prioritising sharp handling and agility.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the C4 if: You're seeking a practical family hatchback with distinctive styling, want an affordable electric option, or prioritise comfort and value over driving dynamics.

Consider alternatives if: You need class-leading luggage space, prefer intuitive infotainment systems, or desire sharp handling and agility.

Competitive Position: The Citroën C4 (2020-present) is a competent middle-of-the-pack family hatchback that does nothing much wrong but nothing exceptionally well either. Whilst it offers genuine style, practicality, and affordability, rivals like the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus deliver superior driving dynamics and infotainment systems. The Skoda Octavia provides more space for similar money. However, if you value comfort, quirky charm, and distinctive design, the C4 is a very sensible choice. The electric e-C4 is particularly compelling for those seeking an affordable EV with genuine practicality.
