Citroën C5 Aircross (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Bold styling makes rivals look dull	Touchscreen is fiddly
Very roomy for five	No 4x4 version
Useful electric range of plug-in hybrid	Short new car warranty compared with some rivals

Quick Summary

The Citroën C5 Aircross is a refreshingly bold mid-sized SUV that stands out from the crowd with its distinctive styling, colourful highlights, Airbump detailing, and striking LED lighting. Launched in 2018 and updated with a more assertive front end in 2022, it offers a head-turning alternative to the conservative designs of its rivals. The interior is impressively spacious and practical, featuring three individual rear seats that can slide forwards by up to 150mm, a flat floor, and generous legroom. Boot space ranges from 680-720 litres in petrol or diesel models, or 460-600 litres in the plug-in hybrid variant.

The C5 Aircross prioritises comfort over sportiness, with supportive seats, soft suspension featuring Progressive Hydraulic Cushions, and excellent isolation from wind and road noise, making it an easygoing companion for long journeys. Engine options include a 1.2-litre PureTech petrol (128bhp), a 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel (128bhp), a 2.0-litre BlueHDi turbodiesel (178bhp), and a plug-in hybrid combining a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an 80kW electric motor (222bhp combined) offering up to 38 miles of all-electric range. Fuel economy is competitive, with diesels achieving 48.2-56.3mpg and the petrol returning 36.6-45.2mpg. Running costs are typical for the class, and the C5 Aircross offers good value for money.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, practical, and stylish SUV with a comfortable ride, those wanting a distinctive alternative to conservative rivals, and buyers interested in plug-in hybrid technology with strong electric range.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising sporty handling or off-road capability (front-wheel drive only), those requiring an intuitive infotainment system, or buyers seeking an extended new car warranty.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the C5 Aircross if: You're seeking a spacious, practical, and stylish SUV with a comfortable ride, want a distinctive alternative to conservative rivals, or are interested in plug-in hybrid technology with strong electric range.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise sporty handling or off-road capability, require an intuitive infotainment system, or seek an extended new car warranty.

Competitive Position: The Citroën C5 Aircross is a compelling choice in the mid-sized SUV market, offering bold styling that makes rivals look dull, impressive interior space with three individual rear seats, and a genuinely comfortable ride. Whilst the Skoda Karoq edges ahead on expert ratings and overall CarGurus score, the C5 Aircross delivers excellent value and distinctive design. It shares engines with the closely related Peugeot 3008 and offers a more comfortable, less sporty driving experience than most competitors. The plug-in hybrid variant provides an attractive option for company car buyers and those seeking electric range. If you can accept a fiddly touchscreen and front-wheel drive only, the C5 Aircross is well worth considering as a practical, stylish, and comfortable family SUV.
