Citroën Grand C4 SpaceTourer (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Lots of space	Not great to drive
Very versatile seats	Patchy reliability record
Smart interior	Ride can be unsettled

Quick Summary

The Citroën Grand C4 SpaceTourer is a seven-seat MPV designed for large families seeking maximum versatility and practicality. With an impressive array of seating configurations, it offers exceptional flexibility: the front passenger seat folds flat for longer loads, the three individual middle-row seats fold, slide, and recline with individual Isofix points, and the rear two seats fold into the floor individually. Boot space ranges from 632 litres with all seats in use to a cavernous 2,181 litres with all rear seats folded, making it one of the most practical family cars available.

Available with a choice of 1.2-litre PureTech 130 petrol or 1.5-litre BlueHDi 130 diesel engine, both producing 129bhp, the Grand C4 SpaceTourer prioritises comfort and practicality over driving dynamics. The diesel achieves 50-55mpg in real-world use, whilst the petrol manages around 40mpg. Entry-level Sense trim includes cruise control, reversing camera, parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, sat-nav, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. However, the dated touchscreen interface with sluggish responses and fiddly menus can frustrate, and timing belt replacements (every five years for diesel, six for petrol) represent a significant maintenance cost at over £500.

Best for: Large families requiring maximum space and seating flexibility, those prioritising practicality and versatility, and buyers seeking a comfortable, airy interior for passenger comfort.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking engaging handling or dynamic driving experience, those concerned about reliability, or buyers wanting the latest technology and LED headlights.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Grand C4 SpaceTourer if: You're a large family requiring maximum space and seating flexibility, prioritising practicality and versatility, or seeking a comfortable, airy interior for passenger comfort.

Consider alternatives if: You value engaging handling, have concerns about reliability, or require the latest technology and premium features like LED headlights.

Competitive Position: The Citroën Grand C4 SpaceTourer excels in practicality and user satisfaction, boasting the highest user rating (5.0/5) among its rivals. However, its expert rating of 3/5 reflects concerns about driving dynamics and reliability. Whilst the Volkswagen Touran and Ford S-Max offer superior handling and higher expert ratings, the Grand C4 SpaceTourer remains an excellent choice for families prioritising space and versatility over driving engagement. The Vauxhall Zafira Tourer provides a comparable alternative, though the Grand C4 SpaceTourer's more modern design and superior interior quality give it an edge for those seeking a contemporary family MPV.
