Cupra Born (2022-2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
More entertaining to drive than most EVs	Busy ride
Long range with 79kWh battery	Annoying touch-sensitive controls
Sharp and stylish looks	Not as roomy as a Skoda Enyaq

Quick Summary

The Cupra Born is the first bespoke model from Cupra, the sporty Spanish brand spun off from Seat's performance sub-brand. Launched in 2022 and updated in 2026, it shares its rear-wheel-drive MEB platform with the Volkswagen ID.3 but offers a more engaging driving experience. The 2026 update introduced a choice of 58kWh and 79kWh batteries, delivering official WLTP range figures of 280 to 372 miles respectively. Power output ranges from 168bhp with the entry-level battery to 322bhp in the top VZ model, all powered by a single rear-mounted electric motor.

The Born's chief appeal lies in its sporty styling, engaging handling, and practical design. It offers more legroom and headroom than a Volkswagen Golf, with a 385-litre boot and comfortable, supportive sports seats. The 2026 facelift streamlined trim levels to Born, Endurance, and VZ, whilst adding physical steering wheel buttons for improved ergonomics. Running costs are competitive, with a full charge costing around £17 for the 58kWh model and £22 for the 79kWh variant at domestic electricity rates. It's a compelling choice for those seeking an affordable, fun, and stylish electric family hatchback.

Best for: Drivers seeking an engaging and entertaining electric car with sporty styling, practical family hatchback space, and competitive running costs.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum interior space (the Skoda Enyaq offers more room), superior infotainment systems (the Renault Megane E-Tech has a better interface), or a smoother ride on poor road surfaces.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Born if: You're seeking an engaging and entertaining electric car with sporty styling, practical family hatchback space, and competitive running costs.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space, superior infotainment systems, or a smoother ride on poor road surfaces.

Competitive Position: The Cupra Born is a compelling choice in the affordable electric hatchback market, offering more engaging handling and sharper styling than the Volkswagen ID.3, despite sharing the same platform. Whilst the Renault Megane E-Tech edges ahead with a superior user interface and ride comfort, and the Peugeot 2008 offers more space, the Born's combination of fun-to-drive character, practical design, and competitive pricing makes it an excellent option for those prioritising driving enjoyment. The 2026 updates, including improved ergonomics and expanded battery options, further strengthen its appeal as a stylish and entertaining electric family hatchback.
