DS DS4 Crossback 1.6 Blue hdi 120 - Well built car. However, the Infotainment system is lacking, it needs to be simplified to aid ease of operation. However, it does have all the necessary functionality there. Fuel consumption is excellent and the ride quality is great, even though the ride height is jacked up somewhat. The comfort level is great and the seats are nice and closeting.

DS 4 (2022-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Distinctive, high-quality interior | Cramped rear seats |
| Comfortable and relaxing on motorways | Lifeless steering |
| Good range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains | Poor residual values |
Quick Summary
The DS 4 (2022-2025) is a premium family hatchback that prioritises comfort, design and interior ambience over sportiness or badge appeal. Launched in 2021 with deliveries from 2022, this second-generation model rivals the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class, but offers a distinctive alternative with retractable door handles, intricate light signatures and luxury-inspired upholstery. All versions come with automatic transmission, reinforcing the car's relaxed, comfort-focused character. Available with turbocharged petrol engines, diesel for high-mileage drivers, and a plug-in hybrid for company car users, the DS 4 now exists purely as a used buy, often at lower prices than equivalent German rivals.
The DS 4 excels on motorways with impressive damping of wind, engine and road noise, whilst the plug-in hybrid E-Tense version offers seamless power delivery. However, the sharply sloping roofline compromises rear-seat headroom and comfort, and the steering lacks feedback for engaging driving. Practicality is competitive with 430 litres of boot space (390 litres for hybrids), though rear passenger space is limited. Running costs are reasonable, with the diesel achieving 50-55mpg and petrol variants returning 40-45mpg, whilst plug-in hybrid efficiency depends on regular charging. The DS 4 represents an interesting, stylish alternative to mainstream premium hatchbacks for those valuing design and comfort over driving dynamics.
Best for: Buyers seeking a distinctive premium hatchback with emphasis on comfort and style, motorway cruisers, and those wanting an alternative to mainstream German rivals.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising rear-seat space, engaging handling, or those seeking strong residual values and badge prestige.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DS 4 | 3/5 | 4.0/5 | 44.0% | 4.0/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz A-Class | 4/5 | N/A | 32.2% | 3.8/5 |
| BMW 1 Series | 4/5 | 3.8/5 | 30.4% | 4.2/5 |
| Audi A3 | 4/5 | N/A | 37.5% | 3.9/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the DS 4 if: You want a distinctive premium hatchback emphasising comfort and style, you spend significant time on motorways, or you seek an alternative to mainstream German rivals.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise rear-seat space, engaging handling, strong residual values, or premium badge prestige.
Competitive Position: The DS 4 (2022-2025) offers a stylish and comfortable alternative to more conventional premium hatchbacks, with a distinctive interior and relaxed motorway manners. Whilst it lacks the driving dynamics of a BMW 1 Series or the badge appeal of an Audi A3 or Mercedes-Benz A-Class, its lower depreciation makes it excellent value for buyers seeking something different. The range of powertrains, including an efficient plug-in hybrid, adds versatility. However, cramped rear seats and lifeless steering mean it's not the all-rounder its rivals are, making it best suited to those prioritising comfort and individuality over practicality and engagement.
