DS 4 (2022-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Distinctive, high-quality interior | Cramped rear seats |
| Comfortable and relaxing on motorways | Lifeless steering |
| Good range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains | Poor residual values |
Quick Summary
The DS 4 (2022-2025) is a premium family hatchback that prioritises comfort, design and interior ambience over sportiness or badge appeal. Launched in 2021 with deliveries from 2022, this second-generation model rivals the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class, but with distinctive styling and upmarket trim that help it stand out from the crowd. It offers a generous 430-litre boot (390 litres for the plug-in hybrid), though rear passenger space is compromised by its sharply sloping roofline and thick trim panels. The driving position is comfortable up front, with supportive seats and good adjustment, though the narrow side windows and high waistline create a snug cabin atmosphere.
The DS 4 was offered with a wide range of powertrains to suit different buyers, including turbocharged petrol engines, a diesel for high-mileage drivers, and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) for company car users. All versions came with automatic transmission, reinforcing the car's relaxed, comfort-focused character. The BlueHDi 130 diesel achieves 50-55mpg in real-world use, whilst the PureTech petrol engines return 40-45mpg depending on specification. The plug-in hybrid offers 30-35 miles of EV range if regularly charged. Now replaced by the DS No4, the DS 4 exists purely as a used buy, often at lower prices than equivalent German rivals, making it an interesting proposition for drivers seeking a premium hatchback that's refreshingly different.
Best for: Buyers seeking a distinctive premium hatchback with emphasis on comfort and style, motorway cruisers, and those wanting an alternative to mainstream German rivals.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising rear-seat space, engaging driving dynamics, or those seeking strong residual values and badge prestige.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DS 4 | 3/5 | 3.7/5 | 33.3% | 4.0/5 |
| Audi A3 | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.2% | 4.4/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz A-Class | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 34.8% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW 1 Series | 4/5 | 4.2/5 | 38.4% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the DS 4 if: You seek a distinctive premium hatchback with emphasis on comfort and style, enjoy motorway cruising, or want an alternative to mainstream German rivals.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise rear-seat space, engaging driving dynamics, strong residual values, or premium badge prestige.
Competitive Position: The DS 4 (2022-2025) is a stylish and comfortable premium hatchback that stands apart from its German rivals through distinctive design and high-quality interior ambience. Whilst the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class offer stronger driving dynamics, better rear-seat space and superior residual values, the DS 4 compensates with a more relaxed, comfort-focused character and often lower used prices. It's an interesting proposition for buyers who value individuality and don't want to follow the crowd, though its poor residual values and cramped rear seats mean it's not the obvious choice for all premium hatchback buyers.

3.7 Overall rating
(3 reviews)DS DS4 Crossback 1.6 Blue hdi 120 - Well built car. However, the Infotainment system is lacking, it needs to be simplified to aid ease of operation. However, it does have all the necessary functionality there. Fuel consumption is excellent and the ride quality is great, even though the ride height is jacked up somewhat. The comfort level is great and the seats are nice and closeting.
Car was very appealing & the price was’nt too bad either !
Cactus, a bit overpriced, considering doring the present market
