DS 4 (2022-2025) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Distinctive, high-quality interior	Cramped rear seats
Comfortable and relaxing on motorways	Lifeless steering
Good range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains	Poor residual values

Quick Summary

The DS 4 (2022-2025) is a premium family hatchback that prioritises comfort, design and interior ambience over sportiness or badge appeal. Launched in 2021 with deliveries from 2022, this second-generation model rivals the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class, but stands out with distinctive styling, retractable door handles and luxury-inspired upholstery. It offers 430 litres of boot space (390 litres for the plug-in hybrid), competitive with or exceeding many German rivals. However, the sharply sloping roofline compromises rear-seat headroom and legroom, making it less practical for taller passengers on longer journeys.

The DS 4 excels on motorways with a relaxed, comfortable ride and impressive noise insulation, though the suspension feels slightly taut around town. Available with turbocharged petrol engines, diesel for high-mileage drivers, and a plug-in hybrid for company car users, all paired with automatic transmissions. The diesel achieves 50-55mpg, whilst petrol variants return 35-45mpg depending on power output. The plug-in hybrid offers 30-35 miles of electric range when regularly charged. Running costs are broadly in line with premium hatchbacks, though insurance and servicing are pricier than mainstream alternatives, and depreciation is steeper than German rivals—which can benefit used buyers seeking value.

Best for: Buyers seeking a distinctive, upmarket hatchback with comfort and style, those prioritising motorway refinement, and drivers wanting an alternative to mainstream German premium brands.

Not ideal for: Families needing spacious rear seats, drivers who enjoy spirited back-road driving, or those seeking the best residual values or badge prestige.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the DS 4 if: You want a distinctive, upmarket hatchback with comfort and style, prioritise motorway refinement, or seek an alternative to mainstream German premium brands.

Consider alternatives if: You need spacious rear seats, enjoy spirited driving, or prioritise the best residual values and badge prestige.

Competitive Position: The DS 4 (2022-2025) is a stylish alternative in the premium hatchback segment, offering distinctive design and motorway comfort that rivals the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class. Whilst it lacks the driving dynamics of the BMW 1 Series and the badge prestige of its German competitors, its high-quality interior, relaxed character and diverse powertrain options make it an interesting choice for buyers seeking something different. The steeper depreciation compared to German rivals can work in the used buyer's favour, offering good value for those prioritising comfort and individuality over traditional premium appeal.
