DS 4 (2022-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Distinctive, high-quality interior | Cramped rear seats |
| Comfortable and relaxing on motorways | Lifeless steering |
| Good range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains | Poor residual values |
Quick Summary
The DS 4 (2022-2025) is a premium family hatchback that prioritises comfort, design and interior ambience over sportiness or badge appeal. Launched in 2021 with deliveries from 2022, this second-generation model rivals the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class, but with distinctive styling and upmarket trim that help it stand out. It offers a generous 430-litre boot (390 litres for the plug-in hybrid), though rear passenger space is compromised by its sharply sloping roofline and thick trim panels. The driving experience is relaxed and composed, particularly on motorways, with impressive noise damping and a smooth plug-in hybrid system that juggles electric and petrol power seamlessly.
Available with turbocharged petrol engines, a diesel for high-mileage drivers, and a plug-in hybrid for company car users, the DS 4 offers flexibility to suit different needs. The BlueHDi diesel achieves 50-55mpg in real-world use, whilst petrol engines return 40-45mpg depending on specification. Running costs are broadly in line with other premium hatchbacks, though insurance and servicing are pricier than mainstream alternatives. Now available purely as a used buy following its replacement by the DS No4, the DS 4 represents an interesting proposition for drivers seeking a premium hatchback that's different to the mainstream, often at a lower price than equivalent German rivals.
Best for: Buyers seeking a distinctive premium hatchback with comfort and style, motorway cruisers, and those wanting an alternative to mainstream German rivals.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising rear-seat space, those seeking engaging driving dynamics, or buyers concerned about residual values.

The Verdict
You should buy the DS 4 if: You seek a distinctive premium hatchback with comfort and style, enjoy motorway cruising, or want an alternative to mainstream German rivals.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise rear-seat space, engaging driving dynamics, or are concerned about residual values.
Competitive Position: The DS 4 is a stylish and comfortable alternative to more conventional premium hatchbacks, offering a distinctive interior and relaxed driving experience. However, its mainstream rivals tend to be slightly better all-rounders, with more rear-seat space and sharper driving dynamics. The BMW 1 Series and Audi A3 both score higher on expert and user ratings, whilst the Mercedes A-Class offers greater prestige. The DS 4's poor residual values mean it won't cost significantly less than these rivals, making it a more niche choice for buyers who value individuality and comfort over badge appeal and handling.

4 Overall rating
(1 reviews)DS DS4 Crossback 1.6 Blue hdi 120 - Well built car. However, the Infotainment system is lacking, it needs to be simplified to aid ease of operation. However, it does have all the necessary functionality there. Fuel consumption is excellent and the ride quality is great, even though the ride height is jacked up somewhat. The comfort level is great and the seats are nice and closeting.
