Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Rugged good looks | Basic and unsophisticated driving experience |
| Practical interior and roomy boot | Not as much fun as a Ford Fiesta Active |
| Low running costs of Bi-Fuel model | Despite the SUV looks, there's no 4x4 version |
Quick Summary
The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) is a rugged supermini designed to offer SUV-like styling and practicality at an affordable price. Based on the standard Sandero, it features a raised ride height, body cladding, and roof rails, making it appear more adventurous, though it lacks four-wheel drive. Despite its small car underpinnings, it boasts a practical interior with generous rear space and a 320-litre boot, outperforming some rivals. Its higher stance also aids ease of entry and exit.
While its driving dynamics are not as engaging as some competitors, it offers consistent handling and a comfortable ride due to its soft suspension. Engine choices primarily included the economical 0.9-litre TCe 90 petrol and 1.5-litre dCi 90 diesel, both known for low running costs, with real-world fuel economy around 45-50mpg. Trim levels like Laureate/Comfort provided essential features such as air conditioning, sat-nav, and parking sensors, making it a well-equipped option for its price point as a used car.
Best for: Drivers on a budget, those seeking an SUV-inspired look without the high cost, buyers needing a practical and roomy supermini, and those prioritising low running costs.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking sophisticated driving dynamics, premium interior quality, true off-road capability, or strong badge appeal.

The Verdict
You should buy the Sandero Stepway if: You're on a budget, seeking a practical and rugged-looking supermini with low running costs, or prioritising ease of access and boot space.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise refined driving dynamics (like a Ford Fiesta Active), a more luxurious interior, or genuine off-road capability.
Competitive Position: The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) carves out a strong niche in the used car market by offering exceptional value for money and SUV-inspired styling in a supermini package. While it may not match rivals like the Ford Fiesta Active for driving excitement or other small crossovers for interior sophistication, its affordability, practicality, and low running costs make it an honest and sensible choice for budget-conscious buyers who appreciate its rugged aesthetics.

(10 reviews)Enjoying the car. Still finding my way around it - many more functions than I had expected (handsfree mobile!) cannot yet sort the radio properly but very happy with it
The car is very comfy and easy to drive. Good size boot, satnav, electric windows at the back, The car is good value for money. First time owner of a Stepway.
Lovely to drive, lots of room and cheap to run, big boot. A brilliant car for familys. You cant compare it to anything else as theres nothing out there thats as big and cheap to run
Its good that most of the cars have sat nav but not all of them, witch would be a great idea, very help full for a lot of drivers,
I switched from a diesel Kia Soul to a petrol Dacia Sandero Stepway. I chose this car because of the roomy boot and ride height, features Id had in the Kia. I was slightly worried about losing some of the luxuries Id had, but came to the conclusion that fewer bits means fewer bits to break! Having to use the key to open the boot is a bit of a pain; not being able to fold wing mirrors in is something I miss in car parks, and not being able to adjust seat height means Im sitting on a cushion to see over the wheel. I chose this particular car over others for sale at the time because it has rear parking sensors, something not all models have, and I felt it would be a mistake to go without after so many years of having them. Its a basic car, but it does exactly what it says on the tin. Overall, Im finding it easy to drive and looking forward to much better fuel economy than my previous car.
