Dacia Sandero Stepway (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Undercuts its rivals by thousands of pounds	More expensive than a regular Sandero
Improved quality and comfort compared with the previous model	Lags behind the latest safety standards
The optional automatic gearbox is smooth	Entry-level cars are quite basic

Quick Summary

The Dacia Sandero Stepway is a supermini-sized SUV that offers exceptional value for money with fashionable crossover styling and 41mm of extra ride height compared to the regular Sandero. Since its introduction in 2020 alongside the standard Sandero, it has preserved the hatchback's appealing, no-nonsense honesty whilst adding more on-road presence. The 2026 facelift brought improved creature comforts and suede-effect trim on top models, allowing it to compete more effectively with rivals like the Seat Arona, Ford Puma and Honda Jazz Crosstar.

Practicality is a key strength, with generous space for tall adults in the rear and a 410-litre boot with split-folding seats. The latest model offers a choice of petrol engines, with the new 100 TCe producing 99bhp, whilst an optional CVT automatic is available. Running costs are impressively low, with official fuel economy just over 50mpg for petrol versions and excellent residual values retaining up to 57% after three years. Despite some compromises in refinement and safety standards, the Stepway represents outstanding value compared to its rivals, making it an astute choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking SUV styling and practicality.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking SUV styling and practicality, those wanting excellent value compared to rivals, and drivers prioritising affordability without sacrificing space.

Not ideal for: Those requiring the latest safety features, drivers seeking premium interior quality, or buyers wanting a refined, quiet driving experience.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Sandero Stepway if: You're budget-conscious, seeking SUV styling and practicality, wanting excellent value compared to rivals, or prioritising affordability without sacrificing space.

Consider alternatives if: You require the latest safety features, desire premium interior quality, or want a refined, quiet driving experience.

Competitive Position: The Dacia Sandero Stepway is a compelling proposition in the small SUV market, offering exceptional value that undercuts rivals by thousands of pounds. Whilst the Renault Captur provides a more refined alternative and the Hyundai Kona offers greater prestige, the Sandero Stepway's combination of affordability, practicality and improved comfort makes it an astute choice for value-conscious buyers. The 2026 facelift has narrowed the gap with more upmarket competitors, delivering better equipment and interior quality whilst maintaining its core appeal of outstanding value for money.
