Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Rugged good looks	Basic and unsophisticated driving experience
Practical interior and roomy boot	Not as much fun as a Ford Fiesta Active
Low running costs	Despite the SUV looks, there's no 4x4 version

Quick Summary

The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) is a budget-friendly crossover that delivers SUV styling on a supermini platform. Launched as the cheapest new car in the UK, it combines rugged aesthetics with practical space, offering a 320-litre boot (1,200 litres with rear seats folded) that surpasses rivals like the Ford Fiesta Active and Suzuki Ignis. The raised ride height and body cladding create an appealing SUV appearance, accounting for around 70% of Sandero sales. Whilst it lacks four-wheel drive and premium refinement, it provides excellent value for money as a used purchase.

Engine options include a 0.9-litre turbo TCe 90 petrol (around 45mpg), a 1.5-litre dCi 90 diesel (around 50mpg), and from 2019, a naturally aspirated 1.0-litre petrol. The Stepway is straightforward to drive with consistent handling and comfortable suspension, though it won't match the Ford Fiesta Active for driving dynamics. Running costs are low, with affordable insurance, servicing at 12,000-mile intervals, and favourable tax rates for diesel models. The interior feels basic with hard plastics, but switchgear is well-placed and storage is adequate. Trim levels progressed from Ambiance and Laureate to Essential and Comfort, with the later Techroad adding style accents.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking SUV styling, families wanting practical space at a low price, and those prioritising affordability over driving refinement.

Not ideal for: Drivers wanting premium quality, sophisticated handling comparable to the Ford Fiesta Active, or genuine off-road capability with four-wheel drive.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Sandero Stepway if: You're on a tight budget, seeking SUV styling without premium pricing, wanting practical space for families, or prioritising affordability over driving refinement.

Consider alternatives if: You desire premium quality and sophistication, require engaging handling comparable to the Ford Fiesta Active, or need genuine four-wheel drive capability.

Competitive Position: The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) stands out as an exceptional value proposition in the budget crossover segment. Whilst the Hyundai i10 offers superior build quality and the Ford Fiesta Active delivers better driving dynamics, the Stepway's combination of rugged styling, practical space, and low running costs makes it highly attractive for budget-conscious buyers. It undercuts rivals significantly on price whilst maintaining reliability and practicality. The Suzuki Ignis offers similar positioning but with less distinctive styling. For those prioritising affordability and SUV aesthetics over premium refinement, the Stepway represents an intelligent choice that delivers genuine value without compromise.
