Enjoying the car. Still finding my way around it - many more functions than I had expected (handsfree mobile!) cannot yet sort the radio properly but very happy with it

Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Rugged good looks | Basic and unsophisticated driving experience |
| Practical interior and roomy boot | Not as much fun as a Ford Fiesta Active |
| Low running costs | Despite the SUV looks, there's no 4x4 version |
Quick Summary
The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) is a budget-friendly crossover that delivers SUV styling without the premium price tag. Built on the Sandero supermini platform, it features a raised ride height, rugged body cladding, and roof rails that transform its appearance into something far more adventurous. Whilst it lacks genuine off-road capability and four-wheel drive, the Stepway's SUV aesthetics clearly resonate with buyers, accounting for around 70% of all Sandero sales. The interior remains practical with a spacious 320-litre boot (1,200 litres with seats folded), though the hard plastics and basic switchgear reflect its budget positioning.
The Stepway offers a sensible driving experience with consistent handling and comfortable ride quality, though it won't match the Ford Fiesta Active for engagement. Engine options include a 0.9-litre turbocharged petrol (TCe 90) delivering around 45mpg, a naturally aspirated 1.0-litre petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel (dCi 90) achieving approximately 50mpg. Running costs are impressively low, with affordable insurance, straightforward servicing at 12,000-mile intervals, and competitive tax rates for diesel models. As a used purchase, the Stepway represents exceptional value for budget-conscious buyers seeking practical, rugged-looking transport without compromise on reliability or affordability.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, those seeking SUV styling on a tight budget, families wanting practical transport, and drivers prioritising low running costs.
Not ideal for: Buyers wanting premium refinement, those seeking engaging driving dynamics, or those requiring genuine four-wheel drive capability.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dacia Sandero Stepway | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 34.8% | 4.2/5 |
| Ford Fiesta Active | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 36.9% | 4.4/5 |
| Suzuki Ignis | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 27.3% | 4.1/5 |
| Hyundai i10 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 35.8% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Sandero Stepway if: You're on a budget, seeking SUV styling without premium pricing, wanting practical family transport, or prioritising low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You desire premium refinement, engaging driving dynamics, genuine four-wheel drive capability, or superior handling compared to budget rivals.
Competitive Position: The Dacia Sandero Stepway (2013-2020) is an excellent value proposition in the budget crossover segment, offering distinctive SUV styling, practicality, and affordability that few rivals can match. Whilst the Ford Fiesta Active provides superior driving dynamics and the Hyundai i10 offers slightly better expert ratings, the Stepway's combination of rugged looks, spacious interior, and genuinely low running costs makes it an outstanding choice for budget-conscious buyers. The Suzuki Ignis offers similar positioning but at a higher price point. For those prioritising value and practicality over refinement, the Stepway delivers compelling credentials.
