The Fiat 500 is widely appreciated for its stylish design, compact size, and ease of maneuverability, making it a great option for urban driving. Owners often highlight its fun driving experience, economic fuel usage, and low costs for insurance and taxes. However, there are some concerns, particularly regarding comfort, as a few drivers mentioned seating issues in specific models. Overall, it presents excellent value for those seeking a reliable and eye-catching small car.

Good value. Exceptionally clean car with built in satnav. Would have loved all leather seats instead of partial leather.

Great ‘ this will be my second 500 I love how nippy they are, easy to drive and park. Economical on fuel, tax and insurance as a work run around it fits the bill perfectly.

2011 Fiat 500 lounge is a great little car... If you find one that's been looked after properly, then you will not be disapointed. Little features like start stop, bluetooth connectivity makes the car feel up to date. An affordable car that is at home in the city, great if you don't need large amounts of cabin space. My only dislike was the steering wheel... which was hard and smooth, making it feel like It could slip through my fingers.... I was worried that I would lose my grip on it if I didn't grasp it extra tightly. A steering wheel cover of some kind would add some much needed texture to aid grip & level of comfort.

Exceptional little car which offers all required for a reliable drive with style. All at a price which doesn’t break the bank.

Quick Summary
The Fiat 500 Hybrid is a stylish city car that prioritises aesthetic appeal and urban driving enjoyment over practicality. Fiat reverse-engineered its electric 500 platform to accommodate a modest 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with mild-hybrid assistance, delivering just 64bhp. Whilst this results in leisurely performance (0-62mph in 16.2 seconds), the 500 excels at low-speed urban driving with eager throttle response and silky-smooth gearshift action. The ride is surprisingly sophisticated, handling cobbled streets and rutted surfaces with aplomb, whilst the light, progressive steering makes it a joy to manoeuvre through city streets.
However, practicality is severely compromised. The boot offers just 183 litres, expanding to only 440 litres with rear seats folded—amongst the smallest in the new car market. Rear passenger space is cramped, and there's no five-door option. Running costs are uncompetitive; at £20,000 for the Icon trim, it costs significantly more than rivals like the Kia Picanto, yet achieves only 40-45mpg—no better than larger competitors. The 500 Hybrid is best suited to style-conscious urban drivers with minimal luggage requirements, not families or those needing versatility.
Best for: Young, style-conscious drivers seeking a fun, characterful city car for urban commuting and shopping trips; those prioritising aesthetic appeal and driving enjoyment over practicality.
Not ideal for: Families needing boot space, those regularly carrying rear passengers, drivers requiring multi-purpose versatility, or budget-conscious buyers seeking value for money.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiat 500 Hybrid | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.9% | 4.1/5 |
| Toyota Aygo X Hybrid | 3/5 | N/A | 33.0% | 3.9/5 |
| Renault Clio | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 37.4% | 4.5/5 |
| Hyundai i10 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 35.8% | 4.5/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the 500 Hybrid if: You're a style-conscious urban driver seeking a fun, characterful city car for commuting and shopping trips, and you prioritise aesthetic appeal and driving enjoyment over practicality.
Consider alternatives if: You need boot space, regularly carry rear passengers, require multi-purpose versatility, or are seeking value for money and competitive running costs.
Competitive Position: The Fiat 500 Hybrid occupies a unique niche as a style-first city car, but it faces stiff competition from more practical and better-value alternatives. Whilst it matches the Toyota Aygo X Hybrid for expert rating, the Renault Clio and Hyundai i10 both score higher overall and offer superior practicality, more power, and better value. The 500 Hybrid's premium pricing and compromised functionality make it a choice for those willing to sacrifice practicality for distinctive styling. For most buyers seeking a sensible city car, rivals offer significantly better all-round propositions.
