Fiat 500 Hybrid Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Comfortable ride	Awkward pedal position
Feels special throughout	Cramped in the back
Easy to drive	Engine runs out of puff quickly

Quick Summary

The Fiat 500 Hybrid is a stylish city car that prioritises character and charm over practicality. Fiat has reverse-engineered its electric 500 platform to accommodate a modest 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with mild-hybrid assistance, delivering just 64bhp. Whilst this makes it underpowered for motorway driving, the eager low-end torque and short gear ratios make it surprisingly nippy around town. The 500 Hybrid excels at urban driving, offering a comfortable, sophisticated ride that belies its diminutive size, along with an intuitive infotainment system and smart interior design.

However, practicality is not the 500's forte. The boot offers a meagre 183 litres, expanding to just 440 litres with rear seats folded—comparable to a family hatchback but impractical for regular luggage. Rear passenger space is severely limited, and the narrow rear door access makes fitting child seats awkward. At nearly £20,000 for the Icon trim, it commands a premium over rivals like the Kia Picanto, yet delivers no fuel economy advantage. The 500 Hybrid is best suited to style-conscious urban drivers seeking a fun, characterful commuter rather than those requiring versatility or value for money.

Best for: Young, style-conscious urban drivers, single occupants or couples seeking a fun city car with distinctive character and comfortable ride quality.

Not ideal for: Families needing practicality, those requiring rear passenger space, drivers prioritising value for money, or those spending significant time on faster roads.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 500 Hybrid if: You're a style-conscious urban driver seeking a fun, characterful city car with a comfortable ride and distinctive appeal.

Consider alternatives if: You require practicality, rear passenger space, value for money, or plan to spend significant time on faster roads.

Competitive Position: The Fiat 500 Hybrid occupies a unique position in the city car market, prioritising style and character over practicality and value. Whilst rivals like the Renault Clio offer more space and better value, and the Hyundai i10 delivers superior expert ratings, the 500 Hybrid's distinctive design and comfortable ride appeal to a specific demographic. The Toyota Aygo X Hybrid offers comparable styling with better practicality, yet the 500 remains the choice for those willing to pay a premium for Italian flair and urban sophistication. It's a car that divides opinion: perfect for some, frustrating for others.
