Fiat Panda (2012-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Affordable to buy and cheap to run | Lacks the safety features of more modern rivals |
| 4x4 versions are handy for country-dwellers | The Panda isn't very well equipped |
| Cute and distinctive looks | Not as fun to drive as a Ford Fiesta |
Quick Summary
The Fiat Panda (2012-present) is a practical and inexpensive runabout that competes with city cars such as the Kia Picanto and Citroën C1. It's an honest, unpretentious car with considerable character, offering surprising practicality for its size. The interior is spacious with generous rear head and leg room, whilst the boot features a clever system allowing rear seats to slide forwards or backwards to trade passenger legroom for additional luggage space. The Panda is pleasingly competent on the road, with a comfortable ride and reassuring handling, though it's not the quickest or most engaging to drive.
However, the Panda suffers significantly in safety, scoring zero stars in Euro NCAP crash testing in 2018 and earning a poor 17% rating for child occupancy safety. This is a critical consideration if you regularly carry children. Running costs are low across all variants, with older 1.2-litre models averaging around 50mpg and Twinair versions returning approximately 40mpg. Vehicle Excise Duty varies depending on the model year, whilst insurance costs remain affordable. The Panda's light weight means tyre and brake pad wear is minimal, further reducing overall running costs.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable, practical city car, those wanting all-wheel-drive options, and drivers prioritising low running costs over premium features.
Not ideal for: Families regularly carrying children, buyers prioritising safety features and modern equipment, or those seeking engaging driving dynamics comparable to a Ford Fiesta.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

| Fiat Panda | 3/5 | 4.1/5 | 30.9% | 3.9/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the Panda if: You're budget-conscious, seeking an affordable and practical city car, wanting all-wheel-drive options, or prioritising low running costs over premium features.
Consider alternatives if: You regularly carry children, prioritise modern safety features and equipment, or desire engaging driving dynamics comparable to a Ford Fiesta.
Competitive Position: The Fiat Panda (2012-present) is an affordable and characterful city car that offers genuine practicality and low running costs. Whilst it falls short on safety compared to rivals like the Volkswagen Up and Citroën C1, and lacks the equipment of more modern competitors, its distinctive charm, 4x4 availability, and budget-friendly pricing make it appealing to cost-conscious buyers. However, for those prioritising safety and modern conveniences, alternatives such as the Hyundai i10 or Volkswagen Up would prove more competent and safer options.

4.1 Overall rating
(11 reviews)its a great little car every thing works, its great value for money and has no gimmicks, great car to drive . everything in the right place. and a car like this stands on its own,
A cracking little motor. Basic but for the price is just what I wanted. Has most of the toys one would like in a car. Just a couple missing. Sat nav. Dab. But for the price I can live without. Drives very well. Good mpg.
Slightly underpowered, it needs an overdrive. Also needs a better coating of paint. Otherwise not a bad little car.
The car has a decent specification for its age. It is comparable to small city cars like VW Up and Skoda Citigo
after 14 years still going strong NO FAILED MOTS !
