Fiat Panda (2012-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Affordable to buy and cheap to run	Lacks the safety features of more modern rivals
4x4 versions are handy for country-dwellers	The Panda isn't very well equipped
Cute and distinctive looks	Not as fun to drive as a Ford Fiesta

Quick Summary

The Fiat Panda (2012-present) is a practical and inexpensive runabout that competes with city cars such as the Kia Picanto and Citroën C1. Now in its third generation, it's an honest and unpretentious car with considerable charm and character. The Panda offers surprising practicality for its size, with a clever rear seat system that allows passengers to trade legroom for boot space, and a 60/40 split folding rear seat. However, it scored zero stars in Euro NCAP crash testing in 2018, earning only 17% for child occupancy safety—significantly lower than rivals like the Volkswagen Up (83%) and Dacia Sandero (79%).

The Panda is pleasingly competent on the road, with a comfortable ride and reassuring handling, though it's not particularly quick. The current generation originally offered a 1.2-litre 68bhp petrol engine, a 73bhp 1.3-litre diesel, and an engaging 85bhp 0.9-litre Twinair petrol. Running costs are low, with the 1.2-litre averaging around 50mpg and Twinair versions returning approximately 40mpg. The Panda's light weight means tyre and brake wear is minimal, and insurance costs are also low. For those wanting a compact car with all-wheel-drive capability—an uncommon combination—the 4x4 variants offer genuine appeal on the second-hand market.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable, frugal runabout, country-dwellers wanting all-wheel-drive capability, and those appreciating the Panda's distinctive character and charm.

Not ideal for: Families regularly carrying children, buyers prioritising modern safety features, or those seeking a car that's fun to drive like a Ford Fiesta.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Panda if: You're budget-conscious seeking an affordable, frugal runabout, a country-dweller wanting all-wheel-drive capability, or someone who appreciates the Panda's distinctive character and charm.

Consider alternatives if: You're a family regularly carrying children, prioritising modern safety features, or seeking a car that's fun to drive like a Ford Fiesta.

Competitive Position: The Fiat Panda (2012-present) remains an appealing choice in the budget city car segment, offering distinctive charm, practicality, and exceptional affordability. Whilst it lags behind rivals like the Kia Picanto and Citroën C1 in safety ratings and modern equipment, its low running costs, unique all-wheel-drive options, and characterful design make it compelling for budget-conscious buyers. However, those prioritising safety and contemporary features should consider the Citroën C1 or Kia Picanto, which offer better value scores and superior safety credentials.
