Ford B-Max (2012-2017) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lots of space inside for such a small car | Iffy Powershift automatic gearbox |
| Sliding rear doors make getting in and out easy | Some electrical issues |
| Fun to drive | Not as fashionable as a small SUV |
Quick Summary
The Ford B-Max (2012-2017) was a compact MPV designed for ultimate practicality, notable for its innovative B-pillarless design and sliding rear doors, which create an exceptionally wide 150cm opening for easy access. This feature is a significant advantage for families, making child seat installation and loading bulky items effortless. Despite its tall MPV body, the B-Max is based on the engaging Ford Fiesta platform, offering surprisingly agile handling, precise steering, and a composed ride that effectively absorbs bumps.
While early petrol engines could feel underpowered, later 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol and 1.5/1.6-litre TDCi diesel units provide better performance and efficiency, with real-world economy around 40mpg for petrol versions. Ford's early SYNC infotainment system, though feature-rich, is now dated. The B-Max boasts low running costs, affordable insurance, and good residual values, making it a sensible used car choice. Its production run was relatively short due to the rising popularity of small SUVs, but its clever design and practicality remain compelling.
Best for: Families needing exceptional accessibility and space in a compact car, drivers who appreciate an engaging ride, and budget-conscious buyers seeking low running costs.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising the latest infotainment technology (like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto), those who prefer the fashionable aesthetic of small SUVs, or those expecting powerful entry-level engines.

The Verdict
You should buy the B-Max if: You need exceptional practicality and easy access in a compact car, enjoy a surprisingly engaging drive, and value low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You desire the latest infotainment technology, prefer the SUV aesthetic, or need higher power from entry-level engines.
Competitive Position: The Ford B-Max (2012-2017) stands out in the compact MPV segment due to its unique B-pillarless design with sliding rear doors, offering unmatched accessibility and interior flexibility. Built on the Fiesta platform, it provides a driving experience superior to many rivals, blending agility with a comfortable ride. While its infotainment might be dated and its styling less trendy than modern SUVs, its clever packaging, low running costs, and surprising driving enjoyment make it a highly practical and sensible used car choice for families.

4.4 Overall rating
(15 reviews)It’s a lovely car. I have had 3 and am so sad that they stopped manufacturing them in 2018. I would love a newer model. The ecoboost makes it a really nippy car. The leg room in the back seats is very spacious. The sliding doors are ideal when parked between 2 cars and you have children in the back. It prevents them smacking the door into the other cars when opening them.
Being a Ford its Reliable . Good points. Cheap to run, quiet and pokey 1ltr turbo. No centre pillars in between the doors. Bad points. Wet belt, over a £1000 to replace, stupid idea. Needs chain drive and this engine would see over 200k miles easy. Leak in the boot and door panel is common. Would prefer a sunroof to the panoramic roof.
I absolutely love the Bmax.! The ecoboost is economical and very cheap to tax. As a blue badge holder I love the high driving position. The best feature by far is the back sliding doors, which are brilliant for small children, and the boot size is great. I would have given five stars but for the blind spot where the front and back doors meet - it can make watching for traffic coming from the right at a junction difficult to see if you are turning left and craning your neck to see past it. Such a shame production was stopped on this gem of a car.
Ideal small SUV Titanium Model has all the extras one needs -easy to drive good gearbox and the 3 Cylinder Model has adequate acceleration-Mine Has Leather seats -Reverse Camera and Parking sensers- All in all brilliant small SUV
Very roomy like the sliding doors wheels seem small on such a size car
