Ford Explorer (2024-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Really good to drive	Doesn't really stand out in any way
Looks good	Touchscreen isn't the easiest to use
Very generously equipped	Some other ergonomic issues

Quick Summary

The Ford Explorer (2024-present) is a mid-sized electric SUV built on Volkswagen's MEB platform, shared with the VW ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq. However, Ford has heavily customised the suspension, steering, and exterior design to create a distinctly different driving experience. Three battery options are available: the 52kWh and 77kWh batteries offer ranges of 239–374 miles, whilst the 79kWh battery with four-wheel drive provides 329 miles of official WLTP range. The Explorer combines practical features like the hidden 'My Private Locker' and spacious 'MegaConsole' storage with a 470-litre boot and comfortable seating for five.

The Ford Explorer excels on the road, delivering engaging handling and responsive steering that sets it apart from its platform-sharing rivals. Both the single-motor rear-wheel drive (282bhp, 0–62mph in 6.4 seconds) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (335bhp, 0–62mph in 5.3 seconds) variants offer enjoyable driving dynamics with well-sorted suspension and pliant damping. Standard equipment is generous across both Select and Premium trims, including electrically adjustable heated seats with massage function, LED headlamps, and advanced driver assistance technology. However, the infotainment system can be frustrating to use, and the lack of a front storage compartment is disappointing. Starting from just under £40,000, the Explorer is competitively priced but faces stiff competition from cheaper alternatives and more established electric SUV brands.

Best for: Drivers seeking an engaging electric SUV with excellent comfort and standard equipment, those who prioritise driving dynamics over badge appeal, and families wanting a practical mid-sized electric vehicle.

Not ideal for: Buyers looking for a standout unique selling point, those frustrated by complex infotainment systems, or those seeking the lowest possible purchase price in the segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Explorer if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics, want generous standard equipment, seek a comfortable family electric SUV, or value Ford's distinctive approach to the MEB platform.

Consider alternatives if: You need the lowest purchase price, prefer a more established electric SUV brand, require a simpler infotainment system, or want a larger boot than 470 litres.

Competitive Position: The Ford Explorer is a genuinely engaging electric SUV that drives better than most rivals, including its platform-sharing cousins. Whilst it lacks a clear unique selling point and faces competition from cheaper alternatives and more established brands, its excellent driving dynamics, generous equipment levels, and attractive styling make it a compelling choice for those who value the driving experience. The Skoda Enyaq offers more practicality, the Tesla Model Y provides greater brand prestige, and the Renault Scenic E-Tech delivers better value, but the Explorer remains a highly capable and enjoyable mid-sized electric SUV for discerning buyers.
