Ford Focus Mk3 (2011-2018) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Great to drive and comfortable to travel in	Troublesome early Powershift gearboxes
The ST and RS hot hatches are lots of fun	Be wary of cars that have not had their timing belt changed on time
Affordable running costs for most models	Small boot

Quick Summary

The Ford Focus Mk3 (2011-2018) is a compelling family hatchback that combines sharp driving dynamics with everyday practicality. This generation rediscovered the rakish design magic of the original Focus whilst offering a more upmarket feel than its predecessor. Available as a five-door hatchback or versatile estate, the Focus delivers an impressive range of engines from thrifty diesels to fire-breathing RS models. With a 316-litre boot (1,215 litres with rear seats folded) and excellent driving position, it caters to both keen drivers and practical families seeking a well-rounded package.

The standout feature is the Focus's sparkling driving dynamics—few family cars are as satisfying for enthusiasts. The turbocharged 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol punches well above its weight, whilst the 2.0 TDCi diesel achieves 45mpg or more. The ST and RS variants offer genuine thrills, though their firm suspension can prove testing on poor surfaces. A major 2014 facelift brought the superior SYNC3 infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen. Running costs are low, spare parts are readily available, and a properly maintained Focus should prove dependable, making it an excellent used buy across a wide range of budgets.

Best for: Keen drivers seeking a family hatchback with engaging handling, budget-conscious buyers wanting affordable running costs, and those interested in accessible hot hatch thrills (ST and RS variants).

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum boot space, those seeking premium badge appeal, or drivers requiring a particularly smooth ride in performance variants.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Focus if: You're a keen driver seeking engaging handling in a family hatchback, looking for affordable running costs, or interested in accessible hot hatch thrills with the ST or RS variants.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum boot space, seek premium badge appeal, or require a particularly smooth ride in performance variants.

Competitive Position: The Ford Focus Mk3 (2011-2018) is a dominant force in the used family hatchback market, offering excellent value and a broad range of models spanning various budgets. Its standout strength is sparkling driving dynamics that few rivals match, combined with comfortable everyday practicality. Whilst the Volkswagen Golf offers premium appeal and the Vauxhall Astra provides slightly better value, the Focus excels for keen drivers. The ST and RS variants deliver genuine thrills at accessible prices. With plentiful supply, low running costs, and easy spare parts availability, the Focus remains a highly sensible choice for those balancing driving enjoyment with family practicality.
