Ford Focus (2018-2025) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Great to drive | Ford doesn’t make it anymore |
| Ample space for tall passengers | Some rivals have bigger boots |
| Excellent EcoBoost petrol engines | Entry-level cars don’t feel as dynamic |
Quick Summary
The Ford Focus (2018-2025), known as the Mk4, continued the legacy of its predecessors by offering class-leading handling and steering response within the family hatchback segment. Unveiled in 2018 and refreshed in 2021, it provided a practical and well-finished interior, with ample space for passengers and a 375-litre boot for the hatchback, and a generous 635 litres for the estate. While it might not have matched some rivals for distinctive styling or ultra-modern interior design, its overall package, especially its driving dynamics, made it a strong contender.
A wide range of engines was available, including efficient 1.0- and 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrols, with mild-hybrid technology introduced post-facelift, and 1.5- and 2.0-litre diesels. The sporty Focus ST offered a potent 276bhp petrol or a 187bhp diesel, delivering thrilling performance without compromising everyday comfort. Running costs are competitive, with ULEZ-compliant engines across the range and flexible service plans. The facelift also brought significant tech upgrades, including a larger 13.0-inch SYNC4 touchscreen, though physical climate controls were integrated into the screen.
Best for: Drivers who prioritise engaging driving dynamics and handling, those needing practical interior space for passengers, buyers seeking a wide range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, and those looking for a versatile hot hatch (Focus ST).
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking the most distinctive exterior styling, those who prefer physical controls for all functions (post-facelift), or those who need an absolute class-leading boot capacity in the hatchback.

The Verdict
You should buy the Focus if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics and handling, need practical interior space for passengers, seek a wide range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, or are looking for a versatile hot hatch (Focus ST).
Consider alternatives if: You seek the most distinctive exterior styling, prefer physical controls for all functions (post-facelift), or require an absolute class-leading boot capacity in the hatchback.
Competitive Position: The Ford Focus (2018-2025) firmly established itself as a top-tier family hatchback, renowned for its exceptional driving dynamics and steering feel, which consistently set it apart from rivals. While it might have been surpassed in terms of bold styling or the most cutting-edge interior aesthetics by some competitors, its blend of practicality, a diverse and efficient engine lineup (including mild-hybrids and a potent ST version), and competitive running costs made it an incredibly well-rounded and sensible choice. It excelled as a driver's car without sacrificing everyday usability, making it a highly competitive option in the used market.

4.5 Overall rating
(91 reviews)The car was perfect for my needs to travel daily up and down the motorway to work, a 30 mile round trip. excellent value for money.
No 5 star rating due to most engines being fitted with wet timing belt. An absolutely disastrous idea in comparison to a chain. Unfortunately many manufacturers are starting to use wet belts, which inevitably will lead to expensive belt failures, and even simple replacements are expensive. In the case of the Focus a great car with in built fragility by Ford
Reliable, comfortable economical stylish, easy to work on. Need I say more
I brought a 2016 focus st3 good interior size nice features and really nice drive. Really nice sporty car and still good for family
Its a good car and is worth the money.
