Ford Focus

Once the UK’s best-selling new car and frequently named among the best all-rounders for used buyers, the Ford Focus is all things to all people. The original version replaced the Ford Escort in 1998, and quickly won favour for is unique angular styling and utterly brilliant handling, all while going toe-to-toe with the Vauxhall Astra and the Volkswagen Golf. It has since been through three more generations, launched in 2004, 2011, and 2019 respectively, all of which were strong sellers until Ford’s hatchbacks were finally usurped by SUVs. Hot ST and RS versions are an enthusiast’s delight, while low-capacity Ecoboost petrol engines are peppy and frugal.

No 5 star rating due to most engines being fitted with wet timing belt. An absolutely disastrous idea in comparison to a chain. Unfortunately many manufacturers are starting to use wet belts, which inevitably will lead to expensive belt failures, and even simple replacements are expensive. In the case of the Focus a great car with in built fragility by Ford
